Outside of CAF I never heard of Mike Gendron. I am here neither to attack nor defend him.

I think the damage that popes such as Alexander VI and Julius II did to the church is lasting. Even among Protestants who never heard of either, when you say ‘pope’, it is men such as they were that come to mind.
I think you are on to something here. It is a sad thought though. It is hard for me to imagine having society force me to shoulder the responsibility for the actions that everyone of my ancestors performed.
I have pondered the situation as possibly analogous to a broken marriage in which the wife has left. He demands her back as she is legally his. But she is convinced, based on past beatings and threats, that he will kill her. Such wives are counseled in the world not to return, and restraining orders are placed against the men. Despite that, some women return and are killed, and some men hunt their wives down and kill them. Howeversomuch that is true or untrue, it may portray how Protestants feel and where some Protestants get this intense anti-pope stuff from. It is not just from the echo chambers on Protestant sites (CAF also can be an echo chamber). It is from long lasting broken trust. I have no idea how to restore trust. Usually once it is gone, it is gone. There is much to admire in the last few popes (before then I didn’t pay attention). But the restoration of trust would require a major act of God.

Perhaps that might help you understand the kind of anger you see in some Protestants.
I don’t really understand your analogy. Pope Alexander was 1492 and Pope Julius was 1503. Wouldn’t a better analogy be the wife left the husband because she discovered his great grandfather was a demanding husband and beat his great grandmother to death? But she left because she is convinced the apple does not fall far from the tree and at some point in time this will happen to her in her marriage.

I think the best way to restore the broken trust is to start judging people on their actions and not on the actions of someone who has been dead for 500 years.

CM, have you ever tried to contact Mike Gendron and maybe debate him personally? I would love to see him get handled by a solid Catholic…again.

I’ve invited him here several time in the past but he never takes me up on the offer.

I felt like it was a waste of time. Now, spreading our faith is never a waste of time, but sometimes, it’s really difficult to talk to a brick wall. I do feel, however, that Gendron’s house is built on sand, and it will come tumbling down eventually.

Hi Tomy,
Oh I pretty much understand Protestant thinking since I was one of them for over 30 years, but I see your point though I think your analogy may be badly flawed.

Besides, 2 bad guys out of almost 300 and they want to paint all Catholicism with that brush? http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h244/corona_stellarum/Smilies/17.gif Non Catholics get bent outta shape when we do that to them for those times and individuals who have done similar injustices to us Catholics or have been proved to be involved in scandalous behavior. I think it’s important that we not compare our best to your worst which the flawed logic of apples and oranges, but we should all rejoice in the best of saintly and holy living among us.🙂

The majority of it is ignorance but in Gendron’s case it’s gross and specious misinformation and twisted out-of-context scripture selections and interpretations and his anti-Catholic “mission” as opposed to authentically preaching the Gospel. That helps no one…

Do you agree with him that the event in question is a bad thing? I doubt that you do, right?

The fact is that Gendron is one of those guys to whom nothing we Catholics do (except abandoning our most holy faith) is good. (a friend of mine here on CAF asked him once if he’d be willing to pray in front of an abortion clinic with us and he said no…though both decry the murder of teh unborn.) Most of his stuff I no longer bother with because I’ve either answered it before and posted it to my blog (this one’s there too now, though not as readable as I’d like. Will have to work on that…) or it’s just too oversimplified and specious to waste the effort.

This one caught my attention just because he makes such extreme polemical remarks about Pope Francis involvement and uses it as a springboard for an a-C rant.

I am also curious as to whether n-Cs on here feel that his scripture citations and interpretations are correct as offered. Any thoughts there?

Thanks for joining the discussion. 👍

Hi Tomy,

It’c certainly not perfect. Just an analogy to a situation where trust has been gravely violated.

If you’ve ever tried to reconcile a feuding couple, you know one of the first things that has to change is to stop the mutual accusations, whether they are right, wrong or whatever, and you ask each how that person can change so the other person can feel loved, valued and trusted. The emphasis being not on what is wrong with the other person but what each can do to change and stop changing the other person.

Catholic-Protestant relations, on the whole, is still at the “I am so not talking to you” level for some people. And here is a sample dialog this thread got me thinking about:
Teacher: See that evil Catholic? He is walking on the right side of the street.
Student: Oooooh. That is evil.

Student: Don’t we walk on the right side of the street, too?
Teacher: Yeah, but when he does it he is up to something. Something evil.
Student: Oooooh.
I think anyone who does the horrible things he describes, like worshipping Mary (as God), idolatry, or preaching a false gospel needs to be confronted. I think Catholics agree with him that idolatry is wrong. I think you can agree with him the Gospel needs to be rightly preached and you can stand together against idolatry, wherever it is found. Catholics are all for right and proper worship pleasing to God. Catholics are all for a holy lifestyle, pleasing to God.

There are Catholics who worship Mary as a goddess. When other Catholics find out about it, they correct them. Likewise bishops correct, or should correct, priests who do not preach Catholic truth.

So, yeah, he has a case. But it is not the case he thinks he has. When he blasts idolatry, he equates it with Catholicism. Unfortunately idolatry is everywhere, and something we all struggle with, some more than others. Every time I sin, I am putting something else in place as more important than God, which means each sin is an act of idolatry. It would be far easier just to feel that I am right and righteous and someone else is wrong than to wrestle with the junk that goes on in my brain and heart. I don’t whittle tree stumps and bow down to them, but there was a certain jacket I was way too fond of that I had to give away. It was beautiful and I loved it like, well, more than God himself. And other things better out of my life than in them.

I read his shots at the pope as habitual. People shouldn’t make accusations without being able to prove it in court. I somehow don’t think his case is up to that.

Egg-zactly.

And think about these stats: Jesus chose 1 bad guy out of 12.

Imagine if folks wanted to leave Jesus because of the actions of Judas.

Well, there was one more (Leo X) that would push it up a little higher, and if you dug further, there were more. But pursuing that direction didn’t seem apt.

More apt would be the response, “Yeah, we have had some real losers and disasters, adulterers, thieves, people who have bought and sold the papacy in there. We admit it. But the Catholic Church is still kicking despite that. Let’s talk about that when YOUR organization has lasted this long.”

I think you would be making a mistake, the same mistake the Donatists made, when you measure the validity of the papacy by the quality of the pope. Augustine had things to say about that. It’s nice when a pope is nice, but it is not necessary for the Church. In contrast to ‘charismatic’ churches that may stand or fall by the quality of the pastors, their ‘charism’ - not the gifts of the Spirit, but their personalities.

I nosed around looking for info on this event. The pope will make a VIDEO appearance along with many other speakers. I stumbled on a sedevac site that parallels Mike Gendron and sounds a lot like him. Maybe they can get together for a picnic or something: they both hate the pope and the Catholic Church. Swap pictures, you know. Stories. Take selfies.

Just don’t ask them to pray together.

A number of us have approached him in writing for debate, whether by email or on the message boards. He has debated some through email with at least a couple guys, but wasn’t really interested in what the Church actually teaches. He just continues to misrepresent the Church. I got ignored when I messaged him about one of his articles, so I just posted my response to him on my blog. I did this more than once.
CM has been more persistent in the past with him, but was pretty much tossed into the “conspiracy against Gendron” bus. John Martignoni tried to debate him as well, and did a newsletter series about it…but again, Gendron wasn’t interested in what we actually believe [about purgatory, in that particular series]. A short while later Gendron was back to misrepresenting what Catholics believe about Purgatory.

From what I read, I think this event will be really special. I wish I could make it.

Some Protestants take a hard line on graven images, emphasizing certain phrases:
Exo. 20:4, You shall not make for yourself… any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
So as a convert to Catholicism this was one of my anti-Catholic false hoods that stuck with me the most that i had to over come. It was through much prayer and revelation from the Holy Spirit did i realize that Catholics do not worship graven images.

So in looking at EX 20:4&5

4 Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me:

What is it saying in “context”… don’t make for your self a golden calf, carve a wooden eagle, or mold a fish and ascribe to any of them a divine nature and worship them as if they were a god.

I have a blog post about iconoclastic beliefs you might check the link in my signature line.

I wrote an entire article about the 7th Ecumenical council, which explicitly deals with this. I am very glad you have touched on it as well.
