I grew up in a social environment that was at least mildly anti-Catholic. The objections to Catholicism weren’t terribly sophisticated. The things I usually heard:
  • Many Catholics are drunks or alcoholics.
  • Catholics do not have a real concept of repentance and amendment. They think they can sin, go to the priest, confess it, then go right out and do the same thing over and over again, just so long as they go to confession.
  • Where a choice has to be made, they favor the life of the unborn baby over the life of the mother — “let the mother die to save the baby”.
  • They pray to Mary instead of Jesus, indeed, they worship Mary as a kind of goddess.
  • They worship idols.
  • They have made-up doctrines that aren’t out of the Bible.
This was the 1960s and 1970s, so you didn’t hear about priests molesting children, but I’d imagine these people have a field day with that nowadays.
