Anti-Catholic Views from Family Members on Everything

How do you deal with family members (immediate family, as in brother, sister, mother, father) that completely disagree with me on everything related to religion?

Some examples…

-Church on Sunday, no spiritual life outside of it
-Don’t read the Bible
-Believe in abortion
-Believe in gay marriage

I mean, they flat out tell me my opinion is wrong, and that it is hateful.

It makes me afraid to be proud of my faith. They look at me weirdly if I pray the rosary, read the Bible, and go to confession…I do all of these things because I make it my daily goal to be a devout Catholic…

Thoughts, advice?

I’m sorry this is happening to you. :console:That is Christian persecution. Don’t argue with them about it, just continue doing what you are doing and pray for them. I have a “friend” who constantly puts down our faith. It’s all part of the relativistic society of this day and age. There’s an excellent book you could read that might help you out: Absolute Relativism but Chris Stefanick, forward by Cardinal Raymond Burke. Very quick read, 59 pages, and very helpful.

A wise person once said “They hate what they think they know about our faith.”

Pray the Rosary in private if at all possible. The same with the Bible. Set an example of a good Catholic, but do not make a big fuss over who and what you are. In time they will come around just as St. Augustine did. keep them in your prayers as his mother Monica did for her son. Patience is a virtue…so I am told. Will pray for all of you.

Pray for them daily. Never argue with them. Demonstrate Faith by example.

Agree to disagree. Maybe try to shift the focus to what you and then agree upon and gently venture from there.

The one thing I have learned in life is to do your own thing and don’t be influenced by others. You have to understand that many people are caught up in a culture of image and find anything of substance such as art or religious belief to be either elitist or odd. It is not their fault, they just cannot see the world any differently. They perceive happiness as something that can be achieved through drink, drugs, sex and shopping. You have to feel very sorry for them really.

You are just going to have to pray for them as the other posters recommended and probably lay down some boundaries of agree to disagree. If they try to initiate arguments with you over these things, simply say that we don’t agree and it is fruitless to try and that you wish not to argue or discuss these topics with them. Likewise, do not bring these subjects up to them since they wish not to change their views. Try to focus on more peaceable topics and ares of discussion. Don’t flaunt your better practice to them.
