The priest of the CC in which my wife, son and I left made reference to the Episcopal church as THE Catholic imposter church who has the vestments, follows the Gregorian calender and claims to have the eucharist but is leading its followers staight to hell. He said that if true Episcopalians were just a little bit smarter than what they are, they would become Catholic. How’s that for bashing??
OK, this is one priest who had a opinon. Anymore? Oh, the smarter ones are leaving and coming back to the Catholic Church. Membership is falling due to infighting among the Episcopals.

Oh come on… I can’t believe that you would defend this. If anyone else did this to the CC, you would be calling it bashing with two bats!! Please.

Who’s defending it? Come on, give some more examples. Give us some good ones. Are there Protestant websites looking for Catholics that bash them? If you want to see Catholic bashing look up www.Catholicleague.org

I just gave you one hello. How about if the Archbishop of Canterbury were to publically state that the CC does not possess the truth that it claims? The CC would be screaming about bashing. Give me some examples of what you define as bashing then.

Actually, whilst it would be somewhat indelicate to point it out to a sincere Episcopalian, that is the factual historical truth. The post-1830 “High Church” or “Anglo-Catholic” Anglican/Episcopalian lirturgy would be totally alien to 17th and 18th century Anglicans who were essentially just like any other protestant group - no vestments, sacraments extremely downplayed, liturgies and rituals despised. What happened was that after Catholicism was legalised in England in 1829 and Catholics came out in public, combined with increased foreign travel by English tourists, many Anglicans realised the cultural treasures they were missing which previous Anglicans had tossed out 250-300 years before. So they re-started many Catholic traditions and practices in the Anglican church. (The Oxford Movement) They started calling the ministers “priests”, dressing bishops in mitres etc. Only of course their priesthood and eucharist aren’t valid no matter how much they make them externally resemble Catholic ones. I can’t help think of the Biblical prophecy that people would arise who adopt the form of true religion whilst denying its power.

The only part I would disagree with is “leading its followers straight to Hell” (we can’t know that for certain) and saying it’s simply a matter of being “smarter”. I’m sure many Episcopalians are smart enough to see the problem with Episcopalianism, but they lack the courage to make the jump, or in some cases their Episcopalian practice is more a social and cultural thing than a matter of belief.

 AFAIK every Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury has stated exactly that, and no Catholic “screams about bashing”. Of course to believe Anglicanism is the true religion implies that Catholicism is false insofar as it contradicts Anglicanism. Catholics have no problem with that.

Actually I and many other Catholics and others would be pleased, interested, and amazed if this present Archbishop of Canterbury made any statement at all about just what exactly he does believe. He seems to think that by saying nothing except meaningless platitudes he can continue to pretend to hold together in one organisation, e.g. people who think sodomy is a sin crying to God for vengeance, and people who think sodomy is an expression of love blessed by God which should be blessed by the Anglican church.
