“Dr. Philip Jenkins argues that anti-Catholicism has become socially acceptable, though it is no different than any other form of prejudice. Hear him make the case for universal recognition of intolerance.”

Very good short interview. Might be of interest to you traditionalists :p.

I think anti Catholicism is actually declining. Most seem to have retreated to the web, whereas I used to see them handing out tracts in North San Diego County. I never see them any place nowadays spreading their “stuff” face to face with people. And the nature of the website world makes their bigotry more obvious to people who end up encountering them. They cluster together on boards, they get into a very self evident herd-think mentality, and they seem to end up trying to outdo each other in the most outrageous and hateful thing they can say about the Catholic Church. Once they that kind “bigotry spectacle” taking place on the internet, in front of countless viewers, they end up shooting down their own cause by making themselves AND their cause appear so ugly…they self destruct and blow up in front of the whole world to see. The casual observer ends up wanting NOTHING to do with those folk.

When someone does accidentally let something slip in a more public way, (like John McCain’s preacher in his prez campaign) they quickly get called on it and go into retreat and deny mode, which shows they have no real backbone to their bigotry…so it’s bad that the bigotry still exists, but the fact that they retreat so quickly shows that it’s a very weak bigotry compared to what I saw in the early 80’s.
