I’ve read other posts about anti-Catholic ministers and am just wondering–why do they bother preaching against the Church? If their basic premise is that the Church is terrible and we’re all misguided, unsaved fools, why are they bothering to talk about us? I’m especially wondering about the purpose behind anti-Catholic sermons. Specifically, I was listening to the last couple of R. C. Sproul’s broadcasts; I think his radio show is called “Renewing Your Mind.” Listening him talking about the Church is like listening to someone try to speak a foreign language badly; he’s got a basic vocabulary, but doesn’t really understand the meaning of what he’s saying. Well, my question is, why is a protestant preacher talking to a protestant congregation about how misguided we are? Kind of like preaching to the choir!

I think they hope their members will be able to use the mis-information and convince us pagans of the errors of our ways.

The rest of the time, I think they just substitute anti-Catholicism for not having a good for their sermons.

I was raised as a Baptist, but that was a long time ago and I just don’t remember them putting another religion down so much as ours. Probably that explains why I became Catholic – I just couldn’t believe that all those accusations were real. We had plenty of Catholic neighbors who weren’t nearly as depraved as one would think.

I remember Deal Hudson saying his peers had an intense fear of philosophy.

Hmmm, I wonder if that also applies to Muslims.

There are many reasons for anti-catholics to spread their message.

Some have been hurt by people in the Church and honestly don’t want others to be hurt since they equate the Church with the people who hurt them.

Others genuinely hate the Church not for what it is but for what they think it is, if it really was just an evil organization keeping people in bondage then I would want to rescue people out of it also.

Some just make a good living off of it and it doesn’t matter if anything is true or not, it is their livelyhood that is at stake and that is pretty persuasive to some people not to look a little deeper.

Mostly it is just fear and mis-understanding that keep people from even paying any attention to anything Catholic so they all end up feeding off of each other in promoting anti-catholicism.

So even if some of these people seem like they are rabidly anti-catholic we should understand that many just have a genuine concern for us and want to help us be saved.

I am friends with an anti-catholic who is softening up in his stance against the Church, it just takes God’s Grace, prayer and patience.

God Bless

The best remedy is spreading the truth, to clear up half truths and mis-information.

Why do they bother? Because the more often you tell a lie, the more likely it will be accepted as truth.

Discussing with anti-Catholics can be quite boring. they tell their lie, you knock it down. moments later they bring it out elsewhere.

Apparently there are some Catholics listening, you tuned in, so they are not merely preaching to the choir. Or maybe they are talking about it for the same reasons that Catholics here talk about how misguided non Catholics are. Usually, when an us/them theme takes place, it makes “us” feel more united, safer, wiser etc, because we are not like “them”. Basic human psychology.

The sillier, scarier, uglier, one can make “them” appear, the less likely that any of “us” will take "them " seriously and be lost from the team.

Because as long as the Catholic Church exists, some will question their authority. As long as they can knock down the authority, they are free to do what they want. The Catholic Church really is good for business too, since a lot of protestants do not understand it, lots of money is to be made knocking the Faith from novels like Left Behind, the Da Vinci Code, and the Late Great Planet Earth, etc.

I think a lot of the protestants really do fear for our souls and think that they’re the ones that got it right. My grandfather once told me when he lived in North Dakota in a town that was mostly Lutheran, him and his brothers and sisters weren’t allowed to play with any of the Lutheran kids. Pretty sad.

Why do Anti-Catholics continue to preach against the Church?

Why does Satan continue his fruitless attacks?

We will understand someday but in the meantime read CS Lewis’, Screwtape Letters

Why do evil people preach against the body of Christ, His Catholic Church?

Because it works! 16 MILLION EX-Catholics in the US alone proves that. More EX-Catholics in the US then Baptists (Baptists estimate that not even 10 million Baptists are left in the US)

Ignorent Catholics leave the body of Christ daily due to lies from anti-Catholics and a lack of knowlege of Dogma.

I despise anti-Catholic prejudice. I once saw a tract that accused Catholics of idolotry for saying that Jesus is present at communion. Mindless trash. Constructive criticsm and honest disagreements with Catholic doctrine are one thing. Blind hatred is another.

Roman pagans often accused us of cannibalism. These pagans seem to have come back to life. The Beattitudes are part of the Church’s patrimony. “Blessed are you when men persecute you and hate you and revile you for Christ sake…”

Let us rejoice in our blessings, be faithful to our callings, and “press toward the mark of the high calling of Christ Jesus our Lord” as St. Paul encouraged us to do.

They honestly think we are wrong. And they don’t want us to go to hell. They love us enough to tell us what they perceive to be the truth. God bless them for their zeal!

Only problem is that they don’t have the full truth. If we loved our neighbor half as much as they did, with half as much passion and conviction then we would have converted the world by now.

Shame on us.

Maybe they attack Catholics because it’s the one thing that all Protestants can agree on.

Plus, it’s good for business. There some people who make a living out of bashing the Catholic Church.

The answer - or a large part of it - is in your question: just change the label from “Catholic” to “Protestant” 🙂

I’m especially wondering about the purpose behind anti-Catholic sermons.

Much the same as that behind anti-Protestant ones, most likely 🙂

Specifically, I was listening to the last couple of R. C. Just like EWTN - for example 🙂

Well, Micheal, I guess my point was, I’ve never in my life heard a priest say, “OK, we’re going to talk about how bad the Baptists are.” (for an example) Why would these protestant preachers waste valuable teaching time, time they could be using to strengthen their faithful in the particular doctrine of their faith, to bash another religion?

I have never heard an anti-protestant homily in mass, and have never heard of one being said. Unless you consider a homily against abortion as being anti-protestant.

Catholics believe that Protestants are Christian; many Protestants don’t extend the same courtesy to Catholics.

I’ve never been to a Protestant service where the Catholic church was even mentioned let alone bashed. But I have seen TV and radio programs from both sides speaking against the other. Maybe it is more of a media thing.

That thing a previous poster said about maybe anti abortion is taken as anti protestant, that was pretty ugly. Why did you bother?

Some Catholics believe that Protestants are Christians. Some of those believe that Protestants are heretics. Since, within Catholicism, heresy is regarded as a mortal sin, this is tantamount to condemning Protestants to eternity in Hell. Other Catholics do not believe that Protestants are Christians at all, and we see plenty of this stripe posting in these very fora.

Quite a few Protestants believe that Catholics are not Christians, because they are taught that Christians are people who follow the sola scriptura doctrine.

As for the exact figures regarding each side’s view of the other, I have yet to see the results of any actual study on the topic.
