Has anyone else been backed into a corner by them? I was arguing with one of them, backing up my statements with sources, and he still throws accusations at me, such as:

Hitler was Catholic and had the agenda of the Catholic Church
The Church praised Hitler
The holocaust was planned by the Vatican
Hitler persecuted atheists
Therefore atheists are the good guys

I mention that Hitler and Stalin were atheists, and they were atheistic dictatorships. I get yelled at for being brainwashed and told that ‘Stalin was Eastern Orthodox and represented Eastern Orthodoxy and Hitler was Catholic and was praised by the Church’.

Do some of these atheists brainwash themselves?

Sorry vent.

God Bless.

It’s a safe guess that they brainwash themselves. I once got in a heated debate with an atheist right here on CAF (will remain anonymous). I pointed out to him that Hitler believed Christianity was invented by the Jews, and he wanted Germany to be “the first of all people to not be infected by this filth” (Christianity). He brazenly denied all of it and claimed Hitler banned The Origin of Species, which is blatant denial of fact. I pointed out that the Nazis closed churches and had priests arrested and killed in death camps. His response was that Hitler “was against organized religion, but was still a Christian”. He denied objective facts, even when I completely blasted his childish notions out of the water.

It’s what Patrick Madrid calls “The Godless Delusion”. It shows that atheists would rather drive themselves to intellectual dishonesty than admit that there is a God.

considering that Catholics, and priests especially were some of the people targeted by Hitler, historically it doesn’t seem to make sense. Especially since the Pope helped hide jews INSIDE the vatican 🤷

Stalin is eastern orthodox? Right, so thats why he tried to destroy it. Makes perfect sense

Obviously this person knows little about Hitler or the CC.Is this a youngster?Anyway i’ll try to clear a few things up.Hitler was baptized at 16yrs old with the urging of his mother who was a catholic.Misses Hitler was married to her uncle and he’d been married twice before.Hitler attended a Benedictine school for some yrs(maybe 1or 2)and sang in the choir.I doubt very much if Hitler ever entered a Church after that except that once when he was baptized.the Pope signed a Concordat with Hitler so he wouldn’t persecute priests and Catholics. He never praised Hitler.the Catholics Church did more to save Jews than anyone else. The Vatican smuggled hundred of Jews and saved them from death.Ive never heard that he persecuted Athiest.Martin Bormann was his closest confidant and he was an athiest.Ive never heard that Stalin had any faith at all.He certainly never went to church.Unless maybe he went to someone’s wedding.

Stalin was in an Eastern Orthodox seminary for a while, but he eventually quit and renounced all religion.

Debating with people like that are pointless. Even if Hitler and Stalin magicaly rose from the dead and personally confirmed your statements these people would not be convinced. Better to just shrug them off than think you can win over the minds of those who are too crazy to know they are crazy.

What a generous view of humanity to ask if it was limited to just atheists. 😉 Personally I’ve never met anyone who had such an extremist opinion in said matters. However I have met/know some people, mostly different denominational “Christians”, who have a less than bright or Christ like view on various other topics. For the most part I don’t engage in an argument, especially if its apparent that they won’t change their mind. Which reminds me of a quote, “It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.~ Walter Lippman” In other words, when they’re that set in their ways I just half hear them out and then leave when permissible. There’s just nothing to be gained by arguing with certain people.

I don’t know about you lads but every time i see people discussing Religion there is always, always one Atheist that says something about the ‘Flying Spaghetti Monster’ being more believable than God.

What you experienced was what students of logic call an ad hominem attack. It is an informal fallacy that is irrational and illogical and does not support the conclusion the user of the fallacious reasoning is trying to support.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

It’s an ancient tactic. Jesus experienced the same.

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.”’ But wisdom is proved right by her actions.”

(Matthew 11)

The argument: Since Jesus hung out with sinners, what He says cannot be true. In your case: Since Hitler was a Catholic, nothing you say can be true.

One way to deal with such illogical lack of reason is to ask a question. You might, for example, ask him this: If someone were to commit murder and then falsely say he did it because he was following you, would you be guilty for his crime? If not, then why blame Jesus or His Church for the crimes of Hitler? Isn’t possible that some who claim to be Catholic really are not acting like it? Don’t their actions speak louder than their words?

Asking questions is a great way to deal with problems like this. You can also always ask the simple question ‘what makes you think that’. This requires the person to justify their belief. They’ll reveal their weak argument and you can then attack the basis for the belief.

Of course this assumes the person is logical and fair minded. The truth is many people are very illogical and not fair minded. That being the case the best thing to do is to always be charitable. That attitude can be more helpful in the long run.
