I’ve just watched the movie - ‘Good luck Chuck’ with Jessica Alba and Conner Price and am noticing an increasing tendency to idolise sin at the movies and was wondering how much of this is actually planned ?

There seems to be not just a glorification of violence and sin but a promotion of a ‘no God’ society and philosophical atheism.

The violent movies seemed to move towards the first 15 minutes where something terrible happened to the ‘hero’ of the movie and that gave the ‘hero’ cart blanche to do whatever he liked during the rest of the movie. Nowadays many movies don’t even bother to start with that, and the only difference between the good and bad guys is that the good guy dresses and acts cool and is only slightly better than the bad guy, who is a completely evil character.

Sex and philosophy has also “progressed” on the screen to produce a very ugly, embarressing world.

This is even happening in some of the cartoons now. Does anyone have any CREDIBLE ideas on what is happening here ?

I find myself walking out of movie theatres now before the end and of being held hostage waiting for the philosophy lessons to subside.

Is there a Christian site that reviews these movies beforehand so i don’t waste my time and money ?

I guess the only way to stop it is make sure you don’t attend and hope the backers lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

Any thoughts ?

For the movie reviews by the Catholic Bishops of America, you may visit: usccb.org/movies/

St. Padre Pio once said something to the effect, “When the refridgerator was invented, it was a gift from God. When the television was invented, it was a curse from Satan.”

Television and movies can be very evil in tempting us and conveying satanic practices and beliefs upon us. Yet, television and movies can be used for good such as EWTN and countless movies. Please, visit that website in order to help you steer clear of the un-Christian material out there. Our culture/popular media really are in the grips of Satan nowadays as “sin” is now “in” and actually glorified.

almost every “mainstream” movie or media nowadays is anti-Catholic.

As Philip Jenkins said, Anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable form of prejudice.

Drives me nuts. America’s anti-Catholic rhetoric is ridiculous. It’s even leaking into the public schools now.

thanks for the link.

I guess these things weaken us as a group in the short term but strengthen us in the long term ?

It really makes me think of a river where the current gets stronger and stronger so that you have to take great efforts just to remain stationary.

It makes you think about getting out of the water altogether ?

I used to use this site when I had little ones:

Screen It

I haven’t been there in a while, but hopefully its still good. I like it better than the Church’s reviews or other sites because he tells you precisely what the movie has in it, e.g. f-word use 10 time as explictive, 3 times to refer to the act; or a man’s arm is cut off, but they don’t show it; or the main character smokes/drinks/uses drugs, etc. Different people have different ideas of what they or their kids should see, and descriptions like ‘mild violence and some language’ are not that helpful.

The Catholic Church spoke against immorality in the movies from its early days. It formed a Legion of Decency that ran from 1933 to 1970.

amazon.com/Cross-Cinema-National-Catholic-1933-1970/dp/0275941930/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202403054&sr=8-4

By the end of the 1960s, Hollywood began producing more and more immoral films, such as Rosemary’s Baby, about a woman who gets pregnant by the devil. It was one of the last films the Legion condemned.

As the 1960s faded into the 1970s, television got into the act; talking about sex, sexual innuendo, and brief glimpses of couples on their way to the bedroom for sex. In the 1980s, porn on cable and Sue Ellen on Dallas driving and drinking straight from the bottle. In the 1990s, partial nudity and profanity on NYPD Blue, plus porn on the internet.

You’ve heard the phrase “pushing the envelope”? Well, the full phrase is “pushing the envelope of what the public finds acceptable.” The 1970s also saw the country-wide explosion of so-called adult bookstores, which is one reason profanity and sexuality are referred to in movie ratings as “adult language” and “adult situations.” In movies, today, boy meets girl, they fornicate, and declare themselves a couple.

Of course, this is all carefully planned. There are still arguments between moviemakers and censors about keeping in some vile, immoral scene: “Can I show it for twenty seconds? How about fifteen?” They fight for the right to show immoral, decadent and perverse images.

God bless,
Ed

The argument of the media can be extended to say it is anti-christian and anti-catholic, this is now clear as several atrocities on Christians currently speaking from an indian context are not reported. I have started a thread elsewhere using information obtained mainly from emails from the Archbishop of the place. Forget immorality christians are also fighting to stay alive. I have started a small thread but perhaps the information is not interesting enough for people to read. It is located here on the ongoing atrocities in Orissa India.

Forget immorality? Jesus Christ said, “If you love me keep my commandments.”

It’s acceptable because it’s the philosophical and practical opposite of the Miltonian Satanism that is the heart of Modernism.

I remember reading an editorial in my nespaper from some Liberal Christian groups saying we could watch the movie “Unfaithful” and Lean something. I surely learned nothing. The movie was all about the Wife using the excuse of her husband never loving her to go out and commit adultery with him throughout the film. Shows how perverse and weird our culture has become. With movies like brokeback mountain, crude jokes and gestures that take place on network tv, why watch half the stuff. You cant even find a CHILDRENS SHOW that has a G rating! Thats pretty sad. 😦
