Anti-Muslim film puts Christian TV in global spotlight

A very good point, and they often have good reasons for doing so. (For example, the protests following this trashy “film” in my hometown - which is NOT Muslim-dominated - led to the injury of ten policewomen, most of whom were Hindus and were purely trying to keep the peace.)

And as for this “free speech” stuff, there are limits to it. It’s NOT a Fourth Pillar of Catholic Teaching, by any means - rather, it derives from Classic Liberalism, which is quite antithetical to what the Church has taught. While the censorship practiced by repressive Muslim governments is immoral and reprehensible, traditional Catholic teaching has always imposed limits on it. (Martin Luther and his merry men changed that, unfortunately.)

The guy above who ranted about “foreigners” (he does realize that the Pope is a “foreigner”, right?) might be interested in what another “foreigner” had to say on this issue:

papalencyclicals.net/Pius09/p9syll.htm

:gopray:

Foreigners?

Including “foreign” Catholics, who join in condemning the violent and immoral reactions of the Muslims to this and other incidents?

Would you mind repeating that?

And do you realize that in countries where Christians are already a minority and facing all sorts of open and covert hurdles, such a stance is just likely to leave us worse off?? That prudence is a virtue? That sometimes, a cautious censorship is the only way a secular government can preserve a fragile peace?

Seriously. Whatever happened to “there is neither Jew nor Greek”??

I doubt St. Peter is going to turn people away from the gates of Heaven because of their nationality.
Yes as an American who cares. Do you think Americans should hold an opinion and dictate on Pakistani-Indian affairs? Once again it was America posted the film and America that was attacked, as far as I’m concerned foreigner’s opinions mean nothing to me in this regard.

I find it strange so many Catholics on here are so upset with this film and demanding limitations on America’s 1st Amendment. Where was all this outcry during the blaspheming of the Christian faith?

I guess a lot of people only hold other people’s religions sacred rather than their own 😦

Considering the extent of American involvement, not all of it above-board, in India-Pakistan affairs, I’ll refrain from commenting on that on the grounds of charity. 😉

And believe me, I’m on your side when it comes to the attacks on your country and your embassy. Those acts are vile and deserve the strongest condemnation.

But to characterize me (or other “foreigners”) as “holding other people’s religions sacred” is disingenuous. We don’t “hold them sacred”; rather, we often live in an uneasy truce with them, and try to avoid getting too confrontational.

Are you aware of the protests that take place in India when churches are vandalized or politicians portray themselves as the Virgin Mary (I’m not making this up, I swear!)? Believe me, we do raise an outcry when the Catholic faith is attacked - it’s just that we’re not visible to the international media.

Actions have consequences. The maker of the film may have been acting within the laws of his own country, but when people in other countries get hurt or killed because of his irresponsbility, then the citizens of those countries do have the right to hold an opinion.

Or is it your opinion that “free speech” holds good only for Americans? 🤷

In regards to “free speech” I am not referring to the general political right, but instead to the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution.

As for the film, if you see my previous comments, you will see that I am not a fan of it. However hearing calls for America to curb its Constitution because people decide to find whatever excuse to murder and pillage is absolutely revolting to me.

The fact is this film came out months before the attacks. So if it truly was all about some obscure film on YT, then that means these riots are not spontaneous but in fact was a planned event.

In my view if anything should be curbed, Islam needs to be curbed first. I am all in favor returning the restriction of obscene speech in America (which is what the film is) however doing it because a bunch of murdering rioters??..no, no compensation, no apologies, no retreat from the face of evil. The world needs to knock it off with the 2-way approach and condemn Islam for doing little to stop such violence (while I commend the peaceful Muslims who are publicly saying “No” to violence, it is not enough) and allowing it to continue. The Christ, the Pope, the Church, Christian leaders are constantly ridiculed, where are the Christians going on a murdering rampage? It doesn’t exist…what about the murdering Jews? or murdering Buddhists? murdering Wiccans? murdering Atheists? murdering Mormons, murdering Scientologists?

I cannot name any other religion in the present time that constantly seeks excuses to murder and pillage in the name of their faith and then hide behind any excuse (bad film, cartoons, George Bush, immigration repeal, Slim Jims, Macho Man Randy Savage, the switch from WWF to WWE…any ridiculous and pathetic excuse). So until the Muslims get their act together and knock it off with burning people and buildings every time their fragile sense of faith is impugned. I will act immature and proudly express my arrogant American patriotism to aggravate them.

It’s time Muslims join the club, every faith in America has been teased or attacked one way or another. These so-called “men” need to stop acting like spoiled rotten children.

I think we actually are on the same page here, and believe me once more when I say that I share your outrage at the “free pass” that Islam is getting these days.

But we must also not forget the historical reasons for this - the end of Western Christendom. With the end of a united moral and political force that could oppose the onslaught of Islam, they have the change to “get away” with a lot more - meaning that we (the rest of the world) are in for what might euphemistically be termed “interesting times”.

And I’m certainly not expecting America to change its laws because of what a non-American citizen might say! I was just referring to the broader issues at stake here, especially in a country like ours which has suffered a good deal from Muslim aggression over centuries. Indian culture, in general, is a bit less confrontational, a bit less “in-your-face”, and our leaders have evolved their own ways of dealing with it. That doesn’t mean that your method is any less valid - in fact, I’d go further and say that if there is hope for a “second Western Christendom” in temporal terms, then your country (provided it can get its act together) would form its nucleus. 👍

It truly is a disgusting film. I watched it on Youtube and had to quit watching it partway through because it is basically soft core pornography. I am shocked that Youtube even allows it to be on there. When I checked which was a few weeks ago, it did not have any warning about offensive or adult content although it definitely should have such a warning. I would not have watched any of the film had I been aware of its pornographic nature.

That said, I find it even more disgusting that Muslims are willing to murder other people because of this film. Now, don’t get me wrong, not all Muslims are willing to murder other people because of this. However, some Muslims are willing to do this because of their “Shariah Law” which forbids the insulting of their “prophet” Muhammad.

I do feel that it is wrong to intentionally insult Muslims but I do not feel that it is wrong to speak the truth about them or their “prophet”, even in an offensive way. After all, how could you not be offensive when speaking the truth about Muhammad? Muhammad was an offensive man. If you ask me, Muhammad was a liar, a pedophile, and a man who was in it for the power and glory. He was not really visited by an angel and if he was, it was an angel of Satan; a demon in other words.

Excellently put. 👍

The trouble is that the cold facts about Islam in general (and about the “Prophet” in particular) are very hard to put down without sounding offensive or “politically incorrect”, especially in today’s world.

That does not excuse the original filmmaker from making a quasi-pornographic film which flies in the face of Christian values.

But notwithstanding this, the reaction of Muslims all over the world has in general been disgraceful, and has just served to confirm the way such films portray them. What’s worse is that there is clear evidence that these “riots” have been staged, and that “protestors” were clearly brought in to disturb the peace and to behave antisocially in the name of the “Prophet” - I have eyewitness accounts from near my home that such was the case here. Spontaneous anger is one thing, but cold-blooded vandalism and terrorism have no excuse whatsoever. None.

I say we are definitely on the same page and I pray the New Evangelization produces valuable fruit. I too agree that the rise of Modernism has polluted the minds of America and the West and has seriously hampered it from dealing with its problems from debt to terrorism to a degrading culture.

Well said, this is absolutely true. I also pray and hope that this happens, and that the New Evangelization produces its fruit not only in your land (which is growing more and more ready for it - people are starting to realize the bankruptcy of liberalism) but in mine as well. It is our only hope, but it is the greatest hope of all. :signofcross:

Yes the pornographic theme was what was disgusting.
Sadly, I think the points the film was trying to make is lost in that stuff. The historical points about Mohammed gets overlooked in the behavior of the actors which is sad because there is a need to bring up the real Mohammed and his history (that is if what is recorded about him 100+ years later is even accurate and there are some questions about him).

It is a despicable film. But what is **even more despicable **is the violent reaction of some Muslims and the calls for “blasphemy laws” that no red-blooded, freedom-loving American would even consider.

-Chris
Why is it a despicable film? Because they had a real man play as Muhammad and they didn’t use a beam of light to represent him? Everything that was in that film is in the Quran. My mother, who grew up as a Christian in Iraq, was forced to learn the stories of the Quran and she recognized everything in the film. At one point she actually said “I wonder if they are going to show this one part” and they actually did. The only despicable thing about it is that 1. it is true and 2. the acting and special effects were horrible.

The way they acted towards the film, however, was despicable.

I know everything in the film was from the Koran. I think it would be more effective if there was better acting, special effects and less blatant sexual grabbing. Sadly, the truth was lost in way it was done.

Agreed, trying to bring the “truth” about Mohammad (quotes used because I seriously doubt that was the filmmakers intention) by being pornographic is not what I consider constructive.

I don’t know how you could have watched it, it was too titillating for me.

I didn’t watch much, the behavior was just too offensive.
