Is there magisterial or at least official teachings on the matter?
I’ve read some of Cardinal Newmans opinions.
Thanks.

Peace,675 Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.
676 The Antichrist’s deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatological judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism, especially the “intrinsically perverse” political form of a secular messianism.

But as, when formerly He was to take man’s nature, and God was expected to be born of a Virgin, the devil created prejudice against this, by craftily preparing among idol-worshippers fables of false gods, begetting and begotten of women, that, the falsehood having come first, the truth, as he supposed, might be disbelieved; so now, since the true Christ is to come a second time, the adversary, taking occasion by the expectation of the simple, and especially of them of the circumcision, brings in a certain man who is a magician, and most expert in sorceries and enchantments of beguiling craftiness; who shall seize for himself the power of the Roman empire, and shall falsely style himself Christ; by this name of Christ deceiving the Jews, who are looking for the Anointed, and seducing those of the Gentiles by his magical illusions. The general conclusion is the anti-Christ is Nero.
The Greek version of his name (written in the Hebrew alphabet – and John, of course, was a Jew) yields 666. If you take the Latin version, you get 616 – and in the earliest Latin translations, that is the number of the Beast.
Nero committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck – and note the beast has a healed wound in his neck.
There was at that time a legend, Nero Revividus, Nero come back to life. And at the time John wrote, many believed the Emperor Domitian was Nero come back to life – and Domitian launched the Second Imperial Persecution (Nero, of course, launched the first.)
Nero, a suicide and persecutor of Christians, if he came back to life would indeed be an “Anti-Christ” – an evil mirror image of the true Christ.
