Attacks on Mormons prompt Mesa forum on hate crimes

In the wake of recent attacks on Mormons in the East Valley, the Mesa Police Department hosts a community forum about hate crimes tonight.

Bill Strauss with the Arizona Anti-Defamation League defines a hate crime.

``It’s a crime motivated in part or in whole by the victim’s real or perceived belonging to one of the protected groups," Strauss says.

He believes that the recent attacks on Mormons may have had something to do with the raid by Texas authorities on a polygamous compound of fundamentalist Mormons near Eldorado, Texas.

We have noticed, in at least one school, an up-tick in anti-Mormon graffiti," Strauss said. I am starting to think that maybe the prominence in the headlines has got people thinking along the lines of the Mormon faith and what makes them different."

Strauss and Terrea Arnwine of the East Valley chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will be among the participants in tonight’s forum.

The forum comes less than 10 days after two Gilbert teens were attacked as they sat in a park near Elliot and McQueen Roads. Police said they were shot at with a pellet gun, then attacked physically and verbally by two other teens, who asked the victims whether they were Mormon.

The suspects, later arrested and turned over to juvenile authorities, made anti-Mormon statements, police said, adding they had carved swastikas into their skin on the inside of their wrists.

The suspects face charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and illegal consumption of alcohol.

Tonight’s forum will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Mesa Public Safety

There is a lot of hatred toward the lds church on the internet and it is unwarrented. Hate is hate and it should be rooted out. Of course we have a certain antimormon tone on this forum also. It is unfortunate.

This is a hate site. Complaining about it is silly. It’d be like going to stormfront and kvetching about the people there. Catholic Answers caters to haters. Without the hate, there would be no content here.

There are only a small number of antimormon kooks here anyway. The Muslims occupy the lowest rung of the Catholic ladder, followed closely by the Jews, Episcopalians and pagans. Catholics are going to murder all of those people first, before they turn their attention to us lol.

This is a lie! The site does not promote hatred of Mormonism. It does offer refutation to Mormonism, but don’t count that as hatred.

If some people are showing hatred, then they need to repent, but don’t confuse individual members with the forum/website itself.

What about the Mormon Threat email that was sent to loyal members of this forum by Catholic Answers? When a religion is classified as a threat, hatred is not far away from the equation.

I can’t respond because I don’t remember that email.

But did they classify Mormonism itself as a threat or Mormons as threats? If the latter, I agree that’s hateful. If the former, it’s nothing but prudent to warn, or advise about other religions and how they differ from the Catholic Church.

You take this stuff too seriously. Anyway, it’s good for the simpleminded to vent their frustrations in a non-destructive way on the internet. That’s what free speech is all about. If Catholics and Klansmen didn’t have sites like this one (and stormfront) they might go cause trouble in the real world.

It’s also good for people like me. I never, ever knew that the Catholic church taught all this nonsense before I came here and read it all firsthand, and had I not seen the goofy ones here behaving badly, I would never have known that the Catholic Church was such a hateful group.

I see few if any Catholics on this forum showing as many signs of hatred as you do. Of course those signs may be deceiving–the Internet often makes us look worse than we are. But if this site does cater to haters, it caters to haters of Catholicism at least as much as to Catholic haters of other traditions.

Well I’d guess these types of attacks against gays, Jews and Muslims already far out number those against LDS and I haven’t heard it called a “national crisis” on their account, so I think your speculation is a bit overboard.

La Mar, by any chance are you a scientologist. When I was with them many years ago, those I knew thought it was such fun to “bullbait” people to see their reactions.
It really only does take a simple mind to take posts out of context to serve one’s agenda. Can’t you be more original or are you only able to catch the ball and run once you have intercepted it?

First off, if you come here looking for perfect people with perfect answers to every question, you will be disappointed. But if you come here, with your hat in your hand looking for guidance, you might get that. I would further venture that every person here that has at least 50 posts has been offended by someone either intentionally or not. And there are some here that definately have an agenda, and maybe even a grudge. Learning to ignore some while you are here might be the best course.

When you post here always remember anyone can reply with anything right or wrong, devil or angel. Just because someone says they are a Catholic doesn’t meen they have all the correct Catholic answers, as with any religious site. I used to frequent another faith’s site and they had numerous internal bickering, so it is not just here, but people in general.

As to the hate issue: Anybody that hates his brother cannot love God, that’s right out of the Bible. If someone commits violence to another human being they are not a child of God. Just because someone drives up in a Bus that says they go to “Church of what’s happening now” doesn’t make them a Christian.

I am ashamed by actions of others they say they are Catholic or Christian in the name of God everyday. I am responsible to love and honor God and love my neighbor as myself. When someone says they are Catholic and then leaves a bad impression on someone of all Catholics that is so contrary to what we are supposed to do. Debating apologetics is best left to the calm and collected and kind who can give answers with love and understanding.

I second that last statement. LaMar is a privately nonbelieving temple recommend-holding LDS. He is angry at all religions, because of the abuses of his own. Give hin some slack, even though I also find him offensive at times.
