Okay here is a question which I have fiercely debated with many of my friends. I find it quite appropriate for this forum:

Would you rather live in the times of antiquity or modernity? If you truly like, add in the medieval period; but the question begs to answer the existential issues surrounding modernity today. In effect, would you as a Catholic (or non-catholic) give up everything to live in periods of the greatest Scholastic and Theological achievement ever?

Just thought it would be an interesting and thought-provoking question. Just a hint: most modern youths abhor the thought and moral impositions of antiquity, as evidenced in college courses and debates.

I think that we’ve made real progress. That’s not to say the ancients and medievals are useless or have nothing to offer us. However, modern advances in logic and science are really important for philosophy and theology and raise a lot of questions. So I think it’s better that we live with more knowledge rather than less. I do, however, think that the current state of morality is deplorable.

My soul would be more satisfied by the morality of high scholasticism;

My mind would be more satisfied by the wisdom of high scholasticism;

My body would prefer hot water and central heating.

That might be true about you, but my mind is satisfied by the knowledge generated from empiricism, and my conscience from the compassionate morality of utilitarianism.

I most certainly do not want to live during the Medieval period.
