I would like to ask your advice about anxiety and panic disorder. I have been struggling with these for years, sometimes I am completely symptom free and sometimes I feel that I cannot take it without medication anymore. I would not like to take medicine as I am afraid of the side effects, I have been trying to take herb pills and also herb teas but when I feel overloaded and too much stressed, they don’t seem to be enough.
If any of you have experience with these illnesses, please share your advice and encouragement with me and I also want to ask you to pray for me.
Thank you in advance and God bless you all.

I am in the same place as you my friend. Anxiety and panic attacks. I have not been diagnosed but from research on the internet, I believe I have agoraphobia (not trying to web md myself) but the symptoms seem more in line with what I experience. Someday I’ll have to go to a psychologist to confront it, but that causes anxiety in and of itself. I feel trapped in my town (thank the good Lord that it hasn’t advanced to the point where I can’t leave the house). But I’m limited to my comfort zone (being my town).

Hello iawoveuooo, so sorry for your distress. We are not supposed to give medical advice on the forums, but you are in my prayers! Are you anxious about certain circumstances? Have you had a physical to rule out anything that could cause these symptoms?

I don’t want to give any specific medical advice, but give a general warning that herbal teas and remedie can have side effects and could potentially be exacerbating the symptoms you’ve been experiencing. I’d urge you to speak with your doctor about the remedies you are taking.

I also read through your other thread about feeling loneliness, and would encourage you to consider group therapy, which may help you better navigate the social situation by learning from how others have coped. Seek a group led by a qualified moderator. Talking about your symptoms and realizing you are not alone may help with the loneliness too!

Hypnotherapy by a licensed therapist is something to research and or consider, or learn breathing techniques to help calm down, exercise is always a plus.

I have anxiety and depression as well, though for the life of me every psychologist I have been to tells me I just worry to much or that I am okay. It does not feel okay at all, but I can remain calm and function fine, it is just inside I am most of the time a nervous wreck.
An I am more of an introvert who seeks to be an extrovert so go figure.

Art, learning to play a musical instrument is also helpful, i find. well i enjoy art a lot when i have that creative bug going… some find the arts more helpful to relieve stress ( not so much for me ) . Also finding people to talk to that will just listen when you need someone to listen and not judge .

There are some good websites available that have forums to converse on but ya really gota surf the net to find some of em.

I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. Caffeine exacerbates my anxiety so I completely avoid it. I take 500 mg of magnesium about 30 minutes before I go to bed and that has helped my middle of the night anxiety. Panic attacks just come on and it feels like I’m having a heart attack. Thankfully, those are rare.

Don’t take any magnesium without checking with your doctor because it can interfere with some medications (e.g. antibiotics).

I’m sorry to hear that you are having a tough time. I will pray for you. As for me, I sometimes get anxious and when I do, I grab my rosary and hold onto it while praying. I don’t take any meds I use PRAYER instead.

Try it, I know it may not sound as helpful, but wearing daily to remind you that Jesus is with you ALWAYS like a rosary bracelet, rosary ring, saints bracelet, etc. During the day when I get stressed while wearing one of these, I hold it and look at it to remind myself the feeling will pass and I am not alone- He is with you, trust Him and ask Him to help you with your distress.

Stay strong iawove and may peace be with you.

No medical advice here, except …
  1. PLEASE be careful about herbal remedies. Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean it can’t have dangerous side effects and interactions.
    and
  2. Please see your doctor about your condition (a naturaopathic or homeopathic physician or D.O. might be better if you are looking to stay away from “medicine”), and accept that sometimes we need a short course of “medicine” to start on the road to recovery.
I also highly recommend the book [The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook](The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook: Edmund J. Bourne PhD …) by Edmund J. Bourne, PhD. It’s a great reference that discusses things such as lifestyle changes, coping techniques and therapy to help with anxiety and panic attacks. It gives lots of information that you can discuss with your doctor. I cannot stress strongly enough that you discuss this problem with your doctor, or find one who is willing to do more than just prescribe medication.

In my own life, I had to be on medication for a while until I learned what my “triggers” are and how to cope with them. The above-mentioned book helped me with that, as did a short course of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). I have found that diet and exercise play a HUGE role in my anxiety (especially my diet), as does the amount of sleep I get.

You will be in my prayers.

I have this book as well, it is a very informative book, and has a lot of good tips and ways to work through a range of phobias, anxiety, and depression.

This is not medical advice. You should talk about these things with your doctor and give the medications a try. I have a genetic susceptibility to panic attacks, through my father who had them all his life but never told us until he could no longer work them off. I have taken certain medications on an as-need basis, only when an attack is imminent. You do not have to take them all the time, and in my case, taking them before the real panic sets in seems to help keep the attacks away, sometimes for a very long time. Don’t be afraid of medications if they help you. I have no side effects at all and this reminds me of taking migraine medications - stops the migraine cold if taken promptly. The panic is really awful so do consider the medications. As I said, you only take them as needed.

And you will be in my prayers.

  1. Praying The Holy Rosary daily
  2. Using Bar-bells and Dum-bells relieves and takes away episodes of anxiety and/or depression triggering a muscle that is in the arm to the brain.
  3. Jogging, Swimming, Walking daily breathing deeply
  4. Yoga positions praying The Holy Rosary at the same time
  5. Listening to Anti anxiety C.D’s a few times per week
  6. Saying this prayer daily: I offer up all of my Crosses including all anxieties, to Thee Dear Jesus, now and for Eternity followed by ten Hail Mary’s or Ten Our Father’s for World Peace and The Holy Souls in Purgatory. Picture Jesus’ Hands taking all of your anxieties and problems into His Hands; for Him to work His Holy Blessings through you daily.
  7. Know and reassure yourself that ‘nothing’ is as important in any of our lives other than our Relationship with Jesus and Our Lady Mary Mother of Jesus! Not the financial concerns, not the job/career, not anything! By Handing all of our worries and anxieties over to Jesus and through His Love and Mercy, He has taken enormous burdens off our shoulders! What a beautiful Blessing and Joy!

I hope your situation will improve, I will pray for you, please you pray for me too. I think it would be a good idea for you to see someone, but I am not sure a psychologist, at least a non-Christian one is a solution. Maybe you could rather think of a spiritual counsellor, like a priest. He could help you with your problems from a Christian point-of-view and I think it is better than facing it alone.

Thank you so much for your prayers.Yes, always the same and certain circumstances cause my anxiety. I had it also before a few years ago, when I took medication, now I take only when necessary and trying to pray as much as possible.
I see the doctor regularly about general medical issues, nothing so far turned out which could cause these symptoms, except for situations when I experience fear and helplessness. I feel overwhelmed and don’t know how to get peace and relief as prayers are not bringing it yet as they should.

Thank you for your advice. I will definitely check the herbal remedies I am using, you might be right and they are not as good as I think they are. Since the death of my father, and some disappointments I have been having, like a burnout in my job, I can cope less and less with being in groups of people. It’s more and more difficult to talk and share, and I avoid all groups so by now, even if I can understand your suggestion might help, I am not able to talk with a group of people about my problems personally.

Thank you for sharing what you feel and your methods of coping. In many ways I am very similar, like outside only few people know what my problems are, and even they do not believe sometimes, because on other days I can manage with medicine and prayer, so it seems as if I was playing it, and it is really terrifying on the days when it comes. I think those who don’t experience this, cannot understand how it feels when it overloads.I am an introvert too and trying to show as an extrovert as I am criticized way too often for not being sociable enough, so I am trying to oppress my real nature and live up to expectations which cause a lot of nervousness in me. Now I am seriously thinking of a week somewhere in a monastery where I could be completely alone with a spiritual leader, to think about the reoccuring problems of my life as they never seem to be solved this way. I am just full of more and more frustration every day.
The problem is that people tend to judge more than listen and I got tired of trying to make them understand that I would need caring and attention at that time when I feel so low. I feel now that it’s better to stay silent about my problems than to bear more criticism about what I am.
I am criticized so often, always for different reasons, and I believe that I don’t deserve it, as I try my best in all areas of my life, I’m just not capable of more, and even the people closest to me always want something from me which is their dream and not mine, or that I am not capable of doing at this point of time.

Hi Iawoveuooo! I’m sorry for this time you are going through… I have been with anxiety, I hated psicologist, psikiatrist and all of kinds of mind doctors, but well you have to go to one,🤷 they are the experts, they are going to discover why are you so anxious, and how to end it and unless to control it.
I know that it’s not easy to talk about your life, to open your heart, your feelings and your life to a stranger, but today that is going to be the cross Jesuschrist is giving to you, and you cannot avoid it.

Don’t get any pills, teas or whatever, go to the specialist, I know it’s not easy…but if you want a solution…😊

I wish you the best!

Thank you for your answer and advice. It is good that you were talking about caffeine as I am drinking it too, not excessively but at least two cups of coffees a day. I am taking magnesium, the normal daily amount and some herbs, but they do not seem to be enough, I think, more and more, that the situations in which these anxieties occur should be changed, but I haven’t figured out yet how to solve those situations and I am afraid that new ones will come. Many times I think God helps me to be strong but then I get tired of criticism and blaming and then give up, that is when my illness becomes quite visible, and I get impatient in anything I do.

Thank you so much for your prayers and encouragement. I am using prayer too, nowadays the Jesus prayer helps the most and I memorise and always pray Bible verses or remember the words of Jesus when I feel bad. I try to avoid medication and be careful with herbs. It is a very good idea and I will try to use something as a reminder not to forget the love of God, as I tend to forget many times.

Thank you for your prayers and answer.I know a doctor who uses naturopathic and homeopatic remedies, he is not a psychiatrist, just GP with natural medicine qualification, but he has already helped me a lot so I think you are right and I might need to discuss it with him. Unfortunately, psychiatrists tend to prescribe only medication and do not help much, so I prefer avoiding them.
Thank you for the book suggestion, I will try to get it, I am sure it will help to think it over and find some solutions.
I think I have discovered what the triggers are in my life, but it seems impossible to cope with them as they come from other people, and if I cannot avoid the behaviour which causes such reactions in them, that later make me feel anxious and desperate, then I cannot find out what else to do, but I would need to think about it peacefully in silence for a few days probably as the noise of everyday life hinders me very much. I am quite a peaceful and solitary person, and my environment is very noisy, so it is difficult to think deeply.
Could you please give me advice on diet connected to this problem? I am living a healthy life, avoiding sugar and refined grains, moderate exercise, what else could I do?

Thank you for your prayers and advice. I have been considering taking medications for a while, but I haven not done it yet, if the illness persists, I will definitely visit a doctor to suggest some natural methods first, if they do not help, then I will take regular medication too. Yes, it is not a solution to insist on avoiding medicine when I cannot heal anyway. By now, I trust still that Jesus somehow listens and heals me without starting the medication.
It is very good news that you do not experience any side effects, and that they are helpful.
