You need to cooperate and actualize the grace and power at work within you by resisting temptation and “crucifying” the flesh:

Galatians**, *Chapter 5:1,16-17,22-25 “***For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ (Jesus) have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.”

Romans**, Chapter 13**:14 “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.”

Ephesians**, Chapter 6:11-18 “Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit.”

1 Peter**, *Chapter 5:6-11 “***So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you. Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for (someone) to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ (Jesus) will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little. To him be dominion forever. Amen.”

James**, *Chapter 1:12 “***Blessed is the man who perseveres in temptation, for when he has been proved he will receive the crown of life that he promised to those who love him.”

It’s almost like living in two worlds at once. Sometimes I can go a couple weeks with no problem them BANG! I get hit and hit hard. I know I have to pray during these times, maybe I don’t love God. This problem is really causing me to lose my faith, I keep asking God for help and keep getting little or no results. It’s taking it’s toll on my marriage (my wife knows about it), my work, my family life. I’m depressed, etc.

How much of a role does diet play in all this, any foods I should or should not eat? What vitamins should I take or not take, and how much. Any help in any of these area’s would be a great help.

What if I can’t get to daily mass???

First get a Baltimore catechism and read it, no matter what the pablum puking modernists think, this IS a mortal sin and is ALWAYS tied to pornography. With the internet and the sex saturated idiot box displaying constant titillation it’s made it much more difficult to avoid this sin. Daily Mass and Eucharist is the best way to avoid it and dedication to holiness and God. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow may not come, are you ready to meet Jesus today, keep it in mind at all times.

How do I keep these things in my mind while I’m tempted? When all I can see is wanting the sin.
Sir Knight:
In addition to the ‘positive’ advise that I offered earlier, here is some ‘negative’ re-enforcements to consider … it has been reveiled by the Blessed Virgin Mary and other saints that the greatest number of souls lost to hell are there because of “sins of (name removed by moderator)urity”.

Nobody likes to think about their own death and while it is unlikely, people die unexpectedly everyday – a fall down the stairs, a car accident, etc. Think about the consequences of dying with an unrepentant AND unforgiven mortal sin on your soul. Would those few minutes of pleasure be worth an eternity of punishment? Yet our faith teaches us that no one with an immortal sin on their soul can enter the kingdom of God.

Make your life busier so that you have very little idle time on your hands … … pray as much as you can. Once your mind starts to wander, it’s time to move on to something else. The most important thing is to find work for idle hands. Consider stewardship to your church & parish. There must be something that you are good at doing and enjoy doing which the church will have need of that they are either lacking today or are paying someone to do.

You’ll be killing two birds with one stone. It’ll keep you busy thus keeping you from sinful activities plus you’ll be performing acts of charity which scripture tells us will atone for a multitude of sins.

I have had the problem of being impure with myself for quite a few years now and I am desparately in need of some good advice from anyone who has struggled with the same situation. My question is how do I call someone or not follow through with the temptation when I want it but I know it’s wrong and want to do it anyway? What could I do to help me rufuse the temptations, something that will help me to not follow through with it. My wife knows about the situation and she is trying to help me out the best she can. This is consuming my life and I want to put an end to this struggle. I would appreciate any advice you may be able to give me. Thanks!
I am in the same boat, unfortunately. One thing I’ve tried to remember is that the desire is not forever, it will eventually pass. I have to tell you, though, the temptations get MUCH MUCH STRONGER the longer you stay pure (sometimes lasting days or even weeks). Also, if you’re ever refused absolution, that’ll wake you up faster than anything because you realize you are making the choice to take part in it. Follow the advice of everyone here: Take part in the Sacraments, pray, and let God take care of it. Just remember, you will eventually be refused absolution! That hurts!

P.S. When the devil realizes you just don’t care about those temptations anymore, he’ll move on to something else so be prepared.

How??? By exercising wisdom to avoid and manage occasions for sin. I would start by writing out a detailed list of “triggers” and early warning sign indicators that you are becoming/making yourself vulnerable to relapse into the behavior that you want to eliminate/abstain from. You can identify these in terms of people/places/things/thoughts & feelings that leave you vulnerable to “occasions for sin”.
Example: place=alone + things=after work, everyone else in bed + thoughts=I can’t resist this, just this one last time, it doesn’t matter…+ feelings=feeling tired, stressed, uninspired, discouraged, angry, self-pity…

Then devise strategies to prevent, reduce getting yourself to the point of no turning back. Example: don’t allow yourself to get too hungry, angry, lonely, tired by monitoring and attending to what/when you eat, talking/working out emotional build up rather than stuffing it, don’t isolate in your emotional needs, daily regulate how you are taking care of your temple.

Another strategy is to list 20 things to do when feeling confronted and at risk to act on a temptation. Example; tell your wife, think about how you will feel afterwards and in confession, think of your children, wait 10 minutes before acting then reassess, yell to God for help, run around the block, read scripture, read a list of all the negative mental/emotional/spiritual fall out consequences, … Then, you need to share your written strategies with your wife and preferably also with your confessor, and report each and every time that you relapsed.

Good to know and remind yourself that intense temptations don’t last forever – “this too shall pass”. The part of “crucifying” the flesh is that after “having done everything” to avoid/manage/reduce/resist temptation to sin, then to simply “to **hold your ground”,**simply resist out of sheer abandonment of self to God to the point of sweating blood. This is where God’s grace takes over as you take up the cross of Christ and “crucify” the flesh, die to self and self desires. Not at all easy, in fact, can feel like your own personal crucifixion (pain, emptiness, tortured desires, desolation, humility…).

Do you love God? Do you trust Jesus? If you really really believe and trust deep down in your heart and soul you can conquer your habit. Ask the Holy Spirit to come to you and reside in your heart every day. Ask Him to gently remind you of His presence every day several times a day. Make a Novena to the Holy Spirit just to get things rolling for you.

Beg Him to tap you on the shoulder every time you are tempted. Mean it. He will come and you will know it. Replace your bad habit with a good habit. The Holy Spirit will give you the strength, I promise.

You will enjoy His presence and feel good and feel happy. Ask Him to help you give more love to your wife then you give to yourself. You will hear His voice gently reminding you of your promise. How can you resist? You will. I promise.

Sex can become an all consuming attraction, especially for young people. Develop other interests, hobbies, and sports. Avoid sexually explicit materials, magazines, TV etc. Keep your mind occupied, keep praying, and you will overcome your addiction.

Don’t get depressed if you fail, evene if you fail repeatedly, and don’t give up hope. Time and maturity will overcome the problem. People do become less sexually active as they get older. All the jokes about older folks having less sexual interests are mostly true. Different hormones kick in, natures urge to constantly reproduce does diminish over time.

When it gets to the point where your wife keeps asking you how long has it been since you last had sex and you truly have forgotten how long it has been, you know it is no longer a problem.

It may not seem like much help but many, many folks have the same problem and go through the same struggles. You are not so different from anyone else. Don’t get depressed or feel like you are the only one who has this problem. The sexual drive is part of natures way to continue humankind.

When you get to 50 or 60, you may look back and wish you have some of the old desires and energy back.
