I am curious and have been for a while. Are there any black Catholics on this forum? If so, speak up! Don’t be shy
Amen.If its of any assurance for you or that important well then allow me contribute to this post l indulge you and volunteer not just my race but ethnicity as well-black and from a nilotic tribe in kenya called luo.So yes we are here too in CAF’s wonderful family and certainly not afraid to proclaim our faith. I pray that we Catholics can be agents of change of a world we want to see of peace and love across borders, that we can all emulate Christ virtues of being ‘color’ blind and even ‘race’ blind. He reached out to Jews and gentiles and samaritans and romans showing love and mercy. This is my prayer.May God Bless all you forum faithful of goodwill.

My husband feels that if you need to distinguish him, he would be more comfortable with African American. He won’t pitch a hissy fit over black, but doesn’t care for it. I understand, I like Caucasian better than white. He isn’t black as coal and I’m not white as a sheet of paper.Being Canadian that word sounds at least strange, and not a little bit offensive. I understand/presume no offence was meant, but is this a word that people use to describe themselves in the USA?![]()
Do you mean the word black? Yes, in the United States, people of African descent are commonly referred to as black.Being Canadian that word sounds at least strange, and not a little bit offensive. In the 1960s anything but “Black” was considered offensive by Black people. Before that it was Negro, and before that Colored.Being Canadian that word sounds at least strange, and not a little bit offensive. We don’t tend to hyphenate people - I’ve never seen or heard phrases like Scots-Canadians, Irish-Canadian, Afro-Canadian, black Canadian etc.My husband feels that if you need to distinguish him, he would be more comfortable with African American. Just curious, but those of African decent in Canada are they African Canadians, or what?
I grew up in a small town that is practically 50% African American and 50% Caucasian. There was one Hispanic girl in school and I never heard her speak. We don’t tend to hyphenate people - I’ve never seen or heard phrases like Scots-Canadians, Irish-Canadian, Afro-Canadian, black Canadian etc.
I teach in a huge (by Canadian standards) Catholic High school (1800 kids) and 30-40% are immigrants. Once they are comfortable with English they readily form multi-racial groups and don’t hang around so much with their own cultural group. They tend to hang with kids they share the same sports or activities or interests with.
With 2nd generation kids, or kids who been in Canada since an early age you could close your eyes when discussing with a class of 15 or 16 year olds and not be able to distinguish by accent, or vocabulary, or even opinions the colour or race of the kids.
It can be quite confusing to a foreigner. Here are the rules, which are subject to change without notice.Being Canadian that word sounds at least strange, and not a little bit offensive. Yes I saw that. You may no longer use the word “niggardly” to describe a stingy person.
Yeah. I guess I can be whatever somebody thinks they need me to be.I’ve always disliked the term ‘Caucasian’ to describe myself. It’s not like I come from some magical land of Caucasia… I prefer “undercooked” or “ghostly pale” as a descriptor.![]()
