Hi Everyone! 🙂

I’m only a few months in my RCIA, but I’ve had A LOT of dreams, mostly centered around various forms of Mary. I always have dreams that signify some importance in my waking life, so when I have these specific dreams, I feel I ought to pay attention to them.

I had a dream recently, that I was at a chapel praying, and I felt such intense sorrow, and sadness, and that I was weeping for Jesus. I also remember the strong presence of the Weeping Madonna.

I haven’t done that much research on her, but I am interested in knowing as much as I can about her weeping state.

I read a lot and I am mainly asking for books to read on her. I’ve checked my church’s library, and we don’t have anything on the issue. I would have to order it, so I would like a REALLY good book that can explain everything I need to know about this form of Mary.

Any other info you might like to give to me, would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, I have a copy of the Pieta Prayer Book, and read the prayer for one of every of Jesus’ blows to his body during his Passion. I felt very drawn to these prayers ( 15 prayers for a whole year) and wondering if the Weeping Madonna and this particular prayer are connected. I am considering making a commitment to pray them for a year…

Thanks so much for you help!
PS… if I am wrong in any way, don’t hesitate to correct me, but please make it positive criticism lol

For what it’s worth:
The Baltimore Catechism:
Q. 1151. Do those who make use of spells and charms, or who believe in dreams, in mediums, spiritists, fortune-tellers, and the like, sin against the first Commandment?

A. Those who make use of spells and charms, or who believe in dreams, in mediums, spiritists, fortune-tellers, and the like, sin against the first Commandment, because they attribute to creatures perfections which belong to God alone.

. . .

Q. 1155. What are dreams and why is it forbidden to believe in them?

A. Dreams are the thoughts we have in sleep, when our will is unable to guide them. It is forbidden to believe in them, because they are often ridiculous, unreasonable, or wicked, and are not governed by either reason or faith.

. . .

Q. 1157. Did not God frequently in the Old Law make use of dreams as a means of making known His will?

A. God did frequently in the Old Law make use of dreams as a means of making known His Will; but on such occasions He always gave proof that what He made known was not a mere dream, but rather a revelation or inspiration. He no longer makes use of such means, for He now makes known His will through the inspiration of His Church.

Thanks for replying, but I just can’t bring myself to believe in the quotes you posted. I know that there are devout Catholics, and Christians in general that have all sorts of spiritual dreams. If dreams were no longer to be believed in, then I believe that God wouldn’t allow us to have them; I think they are one of His many tools for our lives. And, I feel that it isn’t a sin to have had such a wonderful dream about MARY. There is no evil in the world that would allow me to have such a dream (being that these passages said dreams were evil and not to be believed in) about MARY, the person demons fear the most…

I think that sometimes the belief that dreams are evil, is just a means to cover up and embrace that dreams are a gift from God. Perhaps, He gives us specific dreams, because we refuse to believe in things in our waking life. Dreams can give us the images of what can be, if only we would listen.
Of course, there are also scientific explanations for dreams, but I’m not getting into that lol
But I really do think the belief that dreams are evil, and should not be believed in, is a little far-fetched.

Thank you so much for your time!

It is the use of dreams for the purposes of divination or predicting the future that is regarded as superstitious and in such cases is a grave sin against the First Commandment. This is a Church teaching and as a Catholic you are bound to accept that.

daughterofmary,

I don’t see you using the dream as a form of divination or predicting the future. ( I suppose you are aware that there are some people who get hung up on their daily dreams and make a big deal of it about what might happen to them, and look for guidance for their lives that way. ) I believe that is what the other poster meant and why he showed you those words from the Catechism.

If you feel a strong devotion to Our Blessed Mother, it is good to pursue it!

Here is a site with the prayers of meditation on the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

Thank you Dorothy, you and I are on the same page here. I clearly didn’t understand what the Baltimore Catechism was teaching, and that’s why I became defensive. I don’t think that we should act on our dreams alone, but I think that sometimes they are God’s way of showing us things we need to be paying attention to in our lives. Now if I were trying to analyze everything in my dreams, and trying to make something out of them that they aren’t, then yes, I could see how it would be an abomination. But in my case, I had a dream about the weeping Madonna, and wanted to know more about her. I really don’t think that is a sin in any way. Especially, after all, since it was about Mary…

Blessings to you on your journey of getting to know more about the Mother of Our Lord and her sorrows.
