To all you jabronies 😃 out there, I have to say, this is a little strange. Being gungho fans about my living pony as an adult man? It cant be good for the social life, especially dating. If it were me it would be my dirty little secret that I was a jabronie.

I became a Brony around February after reading a friend’s blog post on FiM. One of the major reasons I started watching the show has to be the theme/moral messages, which, of course, have to do with relationships. Since I happened to be a philosophy major interested in ethics, especially virtue ethics of the Thomistic-Aristotelian sort, I started looking at the moral lessons the show gives and I found a major affinity with the thinking on friendship and other virtues of Aristotle (in Books VIII/IX of the Ethics) and St. Thomas Aquinas. I even started a blogging project in which I sought to hammer out some sort of ā€œMy Little Pony Virtue Ethicsā€ in which I looked at the various virtues that each of the Mane Six embodied.

Blast! You’ve beaten me to the punch! I’ll give your blog a read.

In addition my favourite episode of season 1 is Feeling Pinkie keen, for its defence of Pinkies’ ā€œPinkie senseā€ that Twilight (my favourite Pony) can’t prove with science. And my favourite season 2 episode is part 2 of A Canterlot wedding, which shows the power of true love.

i hate that show, the only reason young adult males watch it is because they think they are funny and they want to troll people by being ā€œwierdā€.
im 21 and male and ive watched the first two episodes. because i wanted to see what all the comotion was about. i did not like it. dont get me wrong, it was good for a kid’s show, i might have enjoyed it if i was 8.
but yaaa, bronies we all know why you watch that show, we’ve figured it out. haha youre soooo funny, we get it.
now stop flaunting itā€¦šŸ˜ƒ

As much as I hate to say it - you’re wrong. :o Go to the* Call of Duty* Wiki’s chat room. There’s a reason why half of the avatars are MLP. It’s kind of scary.

Thanks for reading! I should point out some more Catholic Brony bloggers.

Unless I’m mistaken, ā€˜A Canterlot Wedding’ expands the focus from purely friendship to romantic love. However, I’m pretty sure we all don’t approve of Princess Cadence’s magical ability to brainwash couples into loving each other. Love has to be freely given not determined, after all.

My favorite pony is Derpy.

Not sure if troll or serious…

Actually we really do like the show, for all sorts of reasons.

Well, it does not seem completely impossible that the said ā€œmagical abilityā€ is supposed to be somewhat similar to grace - which, as we know, does not violate the free will… I guess someone might even write ā€œfanfictionā€ about it - let’s say, in the form of ā€œSumma Theologicaā€ā€¦ šŸ™‚

Good point, MPat, thanks! I hadn’t considered the similarity to grace. Interestingly enough, I had thought of writing MLP fanfiction in which Cadence spreads the love (as Twilight says) of caritas, the neighborly love beyond the mere romantic love PC seems to embody in the wedding episode.

I’ve started studying STA’s Summa recently, so I’ll be sure to read what he has to say on free will and grace!

Actually, there are some parts of ā€œSumma Theologicaā€ that might be very closely related to MLP. For example, Question 113 of Second Part of the Second Part (about ā€œIronyā€) and the episode ā€œBoast Bustersā€ā€¦ šŸ™‚

i rememer in i think an episode call ā€œdragon questā€ that spike was being pushed by peer pressure to smash an egg, to which he says (i think) ā€œits a defensless eggā€. i though that was a good little prolife comment

Never had the opportunity to watch a full episode but I still respect the fact that there are men out there who do watch it.

I’ve been a lurker on here for awhile, I just stumbled upon this subforum, and I’m very sad. How can you like this show and be an ADULT MALE??? I don’t get it… It’s a show for little girls, not for MEN. MEN need to be strong and be MANLY! I’m sorry for my first post being like this, but I had to say it.

As much as I’m not a fan of MLP either, this is definitely not a good argument against it (assuming there’s any point in arguing against it at all).

Men are supposed to be manly, and that show doesn’t promote very manly values. I know their arguments like ā€œI’m secure with my sexualityā€ and such, but the show just doesn’t promote manliness.

You’re right. Each of the Mane Six can be said to represent a virtue of justice, which STA covers in his treatise on the virtues (part 2.2 of the Summa as you mention). Justice basically concerns giving what is due to others, on getting along with others in society. I’m currently planning to post on all six (Twilight on friendship, Fluttershy on kindness/friendliness, Applejack on honesty/lying, Rarity on generosity/greed, Rainbow Dash on loyalty/gratitude, and Pinkie Pie on playfulness/wittiness). I’m guessing I can also cover Trixie as an example of boasting and Twilight as an example of irony under the virtues of honesty and the vice of lying. Thanks for the suggestion! šŸ™‚

Ah, I hadn’t caught that pro-life comment before. Thanks for pointing it out! šŸ‘

Sorry, but as a self-described nerd, I’m not much of a fan of what you’re espousing to be ā€˜manliness’ any more than I’m a fan of MLP (not into anthro stuff).

Although on further reflection, I’d actually appreciate some of the values if they took out the songs and the anthro element. (Yes MLP fans I’m aware that what I’m asking for is still considered major sacrilege but hey, I can’t help my tastes ;):p).

I’m what is considered a ā€œnerdā€ by many because of things I do, but I still have a traditional view of manliness that I follow(albeit, my form of ā€œnerdinessā€ is probably different, as it comes from medieval reenactment). We should follow tradition as Catholics. I can’t speak for filipinos, but as a European I must follow what my ancestors did as best as I can, which includes being strong and fighting for our ideals, not watching shows made for female children.
