Any bronies (meaning MLP fans who are male)?

So what should be done about the problem of the rabid fans? Ignoring them would not solve it.
As we know, the question “What is to be done?” was considered by Lenin himself. 🙂 But, unfortunately, I have no idea how an all-Russian political newspaper is supposed to help here… 🙂

More seriously, you should probably start by changing the poetic “rabid” to some more prosaic and precise word. For, well, at the moment it is only clear that you do not like those fans, but it is not that clear which fans do you count as “rabid”…

Also, as the previous poster noted, the reasoning that you should stay away from this cartoon because some of its fans are “bad” might be somewhat similar to the reasoning saying that one should stay away from the Church because some Catholics are “bad”. And we know that reasoning is wrong (maybe we could make an apologetics “training session” from this discussion?). Why would the behaviour of some fans matter that much when one decides if one should watch this cartoon? I am not sure you made that case yet…

Finally, if you ask in such general terms “So what should be done about the problem of the rabid fans?”, the answer is probably going to be “Pray for them; everything else depends on the specific details.”, just like in the case of the question “So what should be done about the problem of the bad Catholics?”…

By rabid fans, I’m talking about the ones who shove their love of MLP down people’s throats and using MLP as an excuse for doing idiotic behavior.

Hopefully such a fan would have a friend that could offer some fraternal correction. Otherwise ignoring is pretty much all one can do. There are plenty of things I would find impossible to enjoy if my tastes were dictated by the behavior of fans…some groups with far more notoriety than the Bronies. All I can do is not be a part of the problem. It’s not the show’s fault some people are bonkers.

All fandoms have their bad eggs. It’s the large populations the get hit the hardest. They have more bad eggs simply because they have more fans.

And yet some have used the show as an explanation to explain that some of the fans are bonkers.

And yes, you are right. The large fanbases have more insane fans. Some more than others.

I suppose it’s easier to point fingers at the media than to accept personal responsibility. We see it all the time. Whenever there is a violent crime, it’s the fault if the video game or the movie. The mental state of the person is overlooked as are the exponentially greater number of people who play such games and don’t commit acts of violence. The people you talk about could be that obsessed over anything that scratches a particular itch. MLP happens to scratch that itch right now. In time it will be something else.

Most famous things does have that effect. Be it MLP, the Sonic franchise or anything else.

Well, in such case it would probably be best to list some examples of such behaviour, so that at least the fans reading this thread would know what is too much…?

Other than that, it might not be a problem that can be expected to be “solved” (who would even have to do that?)… Nor should it be the one that would have to scare one away.

I think I can do that.
  1. There are idiots who shove their pairings down people’s throats.
  2. There are idiots who use MLP as an excuse to do something stupid.
  3. There are idiots that have been know to recolor MLP characters due to their lack of creativity.
    Need more examples?

That’s a little less specific than what I had in mind… For example, what exactly is “showing pairings down people’s throats”? You know, it might be that the fans in question do not see that it could be irritating.

To illustrate the level of detail am trying to get, I’ll give an unrelated example from the “go fandom” (in other words, enthusiastic go players). Sometimes some of them try to praise the game they like by saying something like “Chess has x possible positions/variations, while go has y.”. That is somewhat annoying, as it essentially denigrates another nice game for no good reason (both x and y tend to be simply “far more than any threshold that would matter”).

Now, could you, please, you give your “complaint” with about that much detail…?

Oh, and one more question. The third example seems to be detailed enough, but don’t see why anyone would be irritated by someone’s lack of creativity as such… Of course, if, let’s say, someone tried to use such work to get into an art school, it might irritate someone who oversees the admissions, but even in such case it would be trying to get admitted that would be irritating… Or am I missing something obvious…?

Just in case - one “you” is obviously superfluous… Sorry about that… Maybe I shouldn’t have reedited this post that much… 🙂

Okay, I’ll be specific.
  1. By shoving pairings down people’s throats, I’m talking about those who scream about their favorite pairing (for instance, FluttershyxApplejack) is better than every other pairing in the world. If they hear anything close to disagreement from anyone else (and I do mean anyone else, be it brony, pegasister or a non-fan), then they will hurl all sorts of insults and derogatory terms at the disagreeing party.
    Example:
Rabid brony/pegasister: I LOVE RARITYxFLUTTERSHY! IT’S BETTER THAN EVERY OTHER PAIRING THERE IS!
Someone else: I humbly disagree. The ponies are not meant to be paired off.
Rabid brony/pegasister: YOU INTOLERANT (insert rage-filled swear word/insult/derogatory term here)!!!111111
  2. By using MLP as an excuse to do something stupid, I’m talking about using MLP as a justification for anything idiotic that happens in real life and/or the internet. I’ve seen people use MLP to justify bestiality, slash pairings, crack pairings, pornography, bullying among other immoral and idiotic thing imaginable. If I had put examples, the post would be too long. O:
  3. Here is my problem with it. Recoloring any character is considered art theft. Last I checked, MLP characters are copyrighted. This means that recoloring them and then making an OC with it is considered art theft.

1 and 2 is just the exagerated minority whom mostly act like that intentionaly (though they are vocal.)

3, thats a derivative work and thats not against copyright as long as the original owners is credited (and they often are)

I’m not sure if they still are a minority now or not.

The problem with recolors is that in many cases, the original owners are not credited. To be fair, I see this more with the Sonic franchise than MLP.

I’m not sure if they still are a minority now or not…
i disagree with that. they just seem very vocal about it.

but either way, a good show is a good show. why would i not support something because of the fanbase, i mean it would be one thing if it was the creaters but its not

You raise a salient point there.
I’m still unsure if they are still the minority or not.

no statistics for or against. im still going to assume no
I do not have statistics as well.
However, I had found the impression of more rabid fans on sites such as YouTube and deviantART. O:
