Any canon lawyers out there?

While this isn’t a traditional vocation to the priesthood I think of this as a vocation as well. Please let me know if this thread is placed wrongly in the forum.

Ok so my basic situation is this. I am going to meet with a canon lawyer to discuss my future and my desire to go on to get a JCL degree. I am looking for any canon lawyers to talk about their profession and their education. I am aware of Dr. Edward Peters’ blog and website at www.canonlawinfo.com But I was hoping for more one on one interaction right now to learn about this profession. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First of all, I should offer this disclaimer: I am not a canon lawyer. However, I am very familiar with the profession. I have worked in a marriage tribunal, many of my friends are canon lawyers, I have studied canon law for a while now, and I live one floor below the School of Canon Law at the Catholic University of America. [If you decided to become a canon lawyer, then you would most likely be studying here, unless you decided to do a program in either Canada or Europe.]

So, perhaps I can be of some help. :cool:
 
Very cool. I have been in touch with a few canon lawyers or soon to be canon lawyers so I will try to find a relevant question for you. Have any of you canon lawyer friends been sponsored by a diocese (paying for their tuition plus a living stipend), in exchange for service to the diocese upon graduation?

If so how did they manage this one?
 
There used to be a section on the old website of the Canon Law Society of America that enabled persons – much like yourself – to find diocesan sponsors to fund a canon law education. Recently, the website was re-done. I haven’t spent a lot of time getting to know the new site; so, I don’t know whether such a section exists on the new site. You should poke around on that site and get to know it. Also, you might just inquire in your own diocese. Lastly, I would recommend giving the folks upstairs from me – here at CUA’s School of Canon Law – a phone call.
 
I do know that the School of Canon Law does award some scholarships. And, some loan programs are available to you, especially if you study here at CUA – the other schools might be different in that regard.
 
Our member, Deacon John Cameron, who goes by the screen name Cameron Lansing, is a canon lawyer. Perhaps you could PM him.

Thanks everyone for your great advice! I’m still about a few years away yet from graduation from my MA program, but I am grateful for your help in helping me decide where I am off to next!👍
