I am entering the seminary in the fall and need a cassock for serving. I would like one that could be used more often when that time comes

I have an idea as to what I want, but I would like some other opinions.

Right now I am deciding between a Toomey and a Renzetti

the way I see it is

Benefits of the Toomey-cheaper price
Drawbacks-cheaper quality

Benefits of the Renzetti-more custom-made, better quality
Drawbacks-more expensive

I spoke to a lady from Renzetti and asked her opinion on what I would want. She suggested that since I will be in Florida, I get the lightweight wool blend, saying the polyester would make me hot in the high heat-this confused me because the year-rounder from Toomey says it is 100% polyester. I know that I want cloth buttons.

So basically my questions to you are
is the wool really that much better than the polyester?
Should I get piping? I like the look, but it is also $40 more, is it worth it?
Should I get a lining? The Toomey comes with it, on the Renzetti its a $75 option, she said its 50/50 on if hot weather people want it

Thanks for any help

I’m not a cassock expert, but as a rule I believe you are better off paying for the higher quality product - especially if you plan to use it with some frequency. That applies to just about everything: clothes, tools, you name it.

As to the optional items, my inclination, if it’s within your budget, is to get the options you want and like. Only you know how much you like the piping to tell if it’s worth it to you. In any event, resolve to be happy with whatever decision you make. The last thing you need is any sort of regrets.

Go with Quality but keep it simple. Simplicity shows reverence and humility.

I was stationed in South Florida. If you’re entering St. Vincent de Paul, I can tell you that it is very hot in the summer. You may want to go with a light weight blend of good quality. We don’t wear cassocks. We wear a habit. But our habits in Florida are grey and they are made of a wool/synthetic blend. It’s much cooler than polyester.

If you’re going to St. Vincent de Paul, you may want to save some money. Keep the cost down. They don’t wear cassocks that often, probably because of the climate. A low cost cassock will last you a while, because you won’t be washing it every week, as we do with a habit that we wear 24/7.

You mentioned a cassock, so I assume that you’re entering the secular seminary.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

I’ll be going in to St. John Vianney, the college seminary, but its right there next to Vincent de Paul, and I’ll probably go there as well.

Thanks for the advice
