I am just curious if there are any Catholics who are married to non-Catholic clergy. Especially Catholic women who are married to Protestant ministers. From my understanding (and I could be wrong!), many ministers’ wives have roles within their Church - such as teaching Sunday School.

We could expand this and ask if there are wives who belong to one denomination who are married to ministers of a very different denomination.

This thread is not intended to be any sorting of a bashing thread. Simply one to discuss “social” issues of ministers’ wives belonging to another denomination or religion.

I am a SBC minister and my wife is RC.

By default she teaches and leads the youth program at our church. why? No one other than my wife stepped forward. That is another issue.

She also teaches catechism at a RCC and teaches at an Anglican Church.

Within the SBC, the congregation looks at the pastor as a 2 for 1. Meaning they expect the pastors wife to have a very active role in the church. Mine is not as active as most…she is also the mother of 5 children ages 2-14.

Can it be a problem? Sure. Is it a problem within my congregation? No. Oh there are one or two that have problems, but between the deacons, myself and the rest of the congregation they know to keep any unkind words to themselves.

What does she teach? Standard Christian doctrine. Our church is exposed to varied Christian denominational doctrines such as differing positions on mode of baptism, views on the Lords Supper/table/communion. And no one has died, fainted, had heart flutters (on well a couple of ladies have)or started bowing toward Rome

Now the last church we were members of, prior to the current church, neither one of us were allowed to teach. It was a mega lets water down everything to not offend and keep the pews filled and meet the $9 million budget, oh yes isn’t it great the pastor has a building named after him in a foreign country for helping their semianarians, church. (whew). She was catholic and I was even worst…a calvinist! Or so I was called.

The funny part about this is I am reformed in doctrine, but the SBC association I am a part of considers me too Roman Catholic.🤷 Figure that one out.

But this will probably be behind me soon. I am meeting with Anglican priest, and this Sunday a Bishop, to start the process of becoming Anglican. And the Lord willing, an Anglican Priest. BTW my wife will be meeting with them also as the entire family will be moving to orthodox Anglicanism.

I freind of mine is a Presbyterian pastor whose wife is a practicing Catholic. Mind you, this is a military Chaplain and his wife. He attends Catholic mass with her, and then she attends his service. She is a member of both the Military Council of Catholic Women and the Protestant Women of the Chapel. By all accounts it’s a quite happy marriage.

I do not think you would ever see sonething like this in a GARBC Baptist Church

I’m sorry, that sounded like an oxymoron to me. Orthodox Anglicanism? Not sure if it exists…

Billy Graham’s late wife, Ruth was a lifelong Presbyterian and it never seemed to be much of an issue for them.

Prayers that you wife does not leave the Faith, and for your family.

Not orthodox as in Greek, Russian etc orthodox, but meaning holding to sound or correct doctrine.

Now as to what each person thinks is sound;)

thanks for the prayers…we can use them.

As to Faith…my wife has plenty of it and will have it whether she is in the RC, SBC or Anglican Church. No one church has the corner on faith, regardless of what they think.

I find it sad that we christians condemn each other so quickly if we are not in lock step. SBC condemn RC, RC condemn SBC, all in violation of Jesus teaching in Mark 9. Both the SBC and RCC worship the risen Savior. We need to remember that more often.

Of course no one church has the corner on faith - that’s why Jesus promised to found his churchES on Peter, obviously … and why the Holy Spirit was promised to guide the Apostles into all truthS … and that’s why Paul so often refers to Christ’s bodiES …

and why in Timothy we are instructed to take disputes to the churchES and if we won’t listen to the churchES be treated as outcast and heathen …

… how does THAT work, by the way, when they all teach such different things??? Anyone who is in dispute can look for and find a church that conveniently agrees with them on any issue from the very nature of God on down. Where’s the authority to resolve disputes at in such a situation, for one who doesn’t believe anyone possesses that authority? Makes a mockery of that particular bit of Scripture. 🤷

In fact if no Church truly has any corner on the truth then why on earth are you bothering to change faith traditions? Why bother changing the wrapping if the present is going to be the same anyway? 🤷 🤷

Of course you’re going to think I’m just another one of those judgemental Christians  … well Christ Himself, let alone Paul, used much harsher language and were much more critical of those who failed to grasp the Truth (singular) which they were teaching.

“Orthodox Anglicanism” broadly defined means: Anglicanism before it went heywire in liberal “theology”.
The same with Lutheran Orthodoxy.

“Orthodox” is not only used about the Eastern Christians…

In France the most “curious” marriage happened last July : a woman minister of the Reformed Church married … a rabbi !!! ( well of course she couldn’t marry a Catholic priest since Catholic priests can’t marry 😃 )

It’s not condemnation. It is meant with great sadness that she would leave the Real Presence in the Eucharist and the Church that Christ founded. That is why I will also add my prayers.

Cathlic priests can marry - they just can’t BE married 🙂

I want to thank everyone for their answers, especially MarkBrown. I had wondered if there would have been any problems within a congregation if a minister’s wife happened to be Catholic. Would members be worried that their church would start to become “too Catholic” or a fear that Sunday School would become “too Catholic”. I am glad you cleared this up, MarkBrown. Sounds as if the Holy Spirit is truly working within your family.

Because the pastor and his wife have to become members of the church he is pastor of and a Catholic wife could not become a member of aGARBC Baptist Church unless she became a Baptist and was bapized

I see quite a bit of this especially with ex-military men and Philipino women. Over the years of being an independent Baptist pastor I’ve even preformed some of these marriages. I have since repented as after talking to these married Catholic women I see the turmoil they endure between their faith and subjection to their husband. I’ve also watched some ministers move to the Roman Church after learning about catholisism from their wife.
Marriage is hard enough without adding this in the mix. Imagine being a Catholic woman and hearing the misconceptions spoken from her husband from the pulpit. How the catholic is not truly saved, how they worship statues and such. It couldn’t be good for the pastor either when he gets home.

Well find me a nice Catholic priest and I’ll marry him then 😃
I suppose it’s OK even if I am not a Protestant MINISTER …
and we’ll have a lot of nice altar boys together …😛

So if she felt a calling and converted, he would either have to divorce her or lose his job?
