Just wanted to touch on the atheism portion of that. Atheism is by no means a necessary part of libertarianism (the political theory), or Libertarians (the political party). These associations have come about because of the influence of Ayn Rand and her philosophy of Objectivism on libertarian thoughts. Objectivism does indeed entail a militant anti-theism and atheism; however, libertarianism does not.I have some sympathies with them, but I’m not a Randian libertarian by any stretch. Subsidiarity, small government, individual initiative and talent, individual responsibility - yes. Atheism, unregulated business, yes to pot / gay marriage / contraception / etc. - no way!![]()
I’ll chip in here that I am very much a Catholic, and very much a libertarian. I could go all day on my economic, political, social, philosophical, etc, reasons for being a libertarian, but won’t.
