Hi, I’m wondering are there any Charismatic Catholics (although I’m not a huge fan of the word) on this site? Or just generally any Catholics who are using the gifts of the Holy Spirit? If so I have a question I need an answer to regarding praying with other people.

Thanks in advance!

I have been a fairly close observer of the movement for most of my life (and most of the existence of the movement). I feel strongly it has a deep purpose.

I have been involved with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for about 31 years. Because I do not drive at night anymore I am not able to go to our parish prayer meeting.

I am aware that many Catholics who have a deep prayer life and do not attend charismatic prayer groups, do manifest the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and it can be conversational, over a cup of coffee.

Our progress in carrying our cross and following Our Lord Jesus Christ depends on our cooperation with His grace, thus growing closer to Him. The charisms of the Holy Spirit are given to help others.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit such as Wisdom, Understanding, Fortitude, (I am too sleepy now to remember the rest) are given to us individually, to aid in our spiritual growth.

I am sorry to sound stupid, but; what exactly IS a Charismatic Catholic. I have read various articles with various explanations. Is there a basic definition of this term?
Thanks, in advance.

Basically, they’re Catholics who prayerfully seek the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I went to some meetings of Catholics who were involved in the Charismatic renewal. While I quickly realized that it wasn’t really my cup of tea (I prefer Catholic mysticism), I learned about a whole new facet of the Faith and came away with a deep respect for those in the Faith who were involved in it.

Thank you. Having been raised around southern Pentecostal churches, they sometimes described themselves as “receiving the gifts of the Spirit” and some of them handled snakes, spoke in tongues, etc. It does not seem this is a similar practice, that is why I asked. Thanks, again.

Thanks for the responses,
This is my question, if anyone who has experience in this area can help me;

When praying with others it’s common to place a hand on the other persons shoulder. What I’m wondering is this; If the person who we are praying with is in a state of mortal sin/involvement with occult etc., however they are honestly seeking God and Christianity, should we place a hand on them while we pray with them? Or would it be better just to pray without touching them?

All help appreciated!

It is good to ask for this kind of information from a priest who is actively involved to pray for others, with the approval of the Church to do so.

These talks by a Carmelite priest are excellent with regard to the charismatic gifts. His forte was Spiritual Direction and he taught a lot about St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Therese of Lisieux among many other topics.

There is a short bio about him on this site if you go to the home page. It is near the top of that page. I am sending you to the page that has MP3s about the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Hi Dorothy thanks for your reply, but as far as I am aware one (Priest or otherwise) doesn’t need approval to pray with people?

Prayer teams in Catholic Charismatic prayer groups have specific guidelines to follow. They can pray for others following the guidelines.

A priest involved with Catholic Charismatic renewal would know what he is about.

In our Diocese we have a priest who is liaison to our bishop with regard to the renewal. Our bishop attends the yearly three-day charismatic conference for one day, to concelebrate the mass.

A charism is by definition an extraordinary gift, or grace of the Holy Spirit. It is not a sign that a person is necessarily holier than another person. All charisms are given for building up the kingdom of God, and for the individual’s personal’s glory.
Each of us by virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation has been given specific gifts. It could be said that in some families that gifts are hidden, packed away in the back of closet somewhere and never touched. The Sacraments received are more like a family ritual, a custom that each person goes through and never really experiences the power of God in his/her life. As you have learned through Catechism, you are reborn through the Sacrament of Baptism. Like any child you continue to grow and learn. As we go through life, each of us make a greater and greater commitment along this pathway, this journey. One of these commitments is made at Confirmation when we complete our initiation into the Church. We are also called to continually remain open like children to the gifts that God has for each one of us, that we might be able to use them in service for others.
Some of the saints were known for their healing power, one of the charisms. The most commonly manifested and misunderstood of the charisms is the ability to pray in tongues as the Apostles did at Pentecost. More important than any of the gifts is the inward disposition of the receiver, the changes that come about as the person allows God to transform him or her.
Since the primary purpose of the gifts is service, it is possible for you to not know if the person sitting next to you in the pew at Mass is charismatic.

This looks like a very good site for sound teaching on prayer.

The home page has good links

When I pray with someone on my own, I ask before I place a hand on them. Oftentimes, they will hold out their hands to be held or touched. I have observed many people placing their hands on someone’s shoulder or even knee.

Again, I always ask, as some people do have issues with ‘touching’. But, if they are in mortal sin, that won’t transfer to me, even if I touch them. I trust in God in my prayers. He is stronger than any sin or occult involvement, and I believe in His protection, especially as I join Him in prayer.

Yes, God is definitely greater than our sins.
Since the subject has been mentioned, many Charismatic prayer meetings do begin by invoking God’s protection not only on all the members present but on those not present as well as all family members and homes.
I am always humbled when people walk up to me, especially on the street and ask me to pray for them.

Other ways that the gifts are manifested is that there will be a discussion and I will receive “a word of knowledge,” some type of information that personal training or experience didn’t give me. You could call it inspiration. This isn’t necessarily happening in church. It can happen on the bus or anywhere, even with people who are Christians but not Catholics. Confirmation will come with “Will you say that again?” I will try to recall what I just said that brought encouragement to another person who may be struggling with a life problem, or may need to make certain changes. God uses us in different ways.

About 14 years ago or so, a woman sat down with me on a bench out of the blue, and we had quite the discussion, and she told me things that touched my heart, all in God’s name. It was quite real, and quite true, and completely God’s. She was Christian, but not Catholic.

I’ve received those ‘words’ or sentences myself; they didn’t make sense to me, but they did to the person I was visiting with. It doesn’t happen that often, yet, but in retrospect, I see more and more where it happened. Please pray that we all open ourselves to the God’s Gifts, especially the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thanks for your reply. I think you’re probably right however it was just something that was on my mind that I didn’t have a definite answer or Church teaching on. I’ll continue to pray with others and trust in God’s protection. 🙂

When I was on prayer teams at the yearly Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conferences in my area, we were instructed to pray together as a team (2 or 3 persons on each team) and also ask for the protection of the Precious Blood of Jesus.
