Any Computer Programmers Out There?

Just wondering how many folks on this site might be computer programmers?

The reason I ask is I used to program a great deal, got away from it, and have since returned to it. In so doing, I have been studying some JavaScript, and I learned the creator of the JavaScript language is a Catholic fellow by the name of Brendan Eich. To boot, I also just learned he was fired from his job for his defense of Catholic beliefs!

This kind of discrimination was also addressed during the recent Facebook hearings on Capital hill, when Ted Cruz pointed out how many Catholic sites have been discriminated against.

I guess my ultimate question is - what is it going to take to protect the integrity of our Catholic identity online? My question is general, but my lean is - I’d like to get involved with other Catholic coders, or Catholic coding projects, if anyone has some insight on how to get involved…

This guy wasn’t fired as a computer programmer. He was fired as a CEO. There is a humongous difference.

CEOs are frequently fired for many different reasons, and generally have provisions in their contracts covering their potential firing. CEOs do not have job security - they serve only as long as the board considers them effective (and usually as long as they keep the stock price going up and don’t get the company involved in any controversey).

In the case of Eich, he was a controversial pick for CEO already based on his planned business strategy and his technical experience. Several board members resigned when he was chosen, for reasons having nothing to do with his Catholicism or his views on gays. Also, if this guy is smart enough to be a CEO, he was smart enough to know that any political contribution he made was going to be in the public eye.

Sorry, but I’m not seeing any big “discrimination” against “coders” here. Do you have some other example of religious discrimination involving an actual coder and not involving a CEO with questionable qualifications for his job?

Out of all industries today I think coding and software engineering are probably one of the few jobs where religious beliefs and political lines don’t affect the job except in rare circumstances. My husbands small office is religiously and politically diverse and ions more tolerant towards everyone- especially Catholics— than my job in k12 and higher ed ever were. Management is also very politically biased.

I prefer to program in Python, regardless that the python is a serpent. 🤔

Pardon me, that was facetious. The fact is that nothing is stopping you or me from working on projects that promote or support Catholic living.

What sort of Catholic coding projects do you envision? Are you aware of any Catholic software currently on the market?

Ahhh. When I was in my software phase, I preferred Pascal. Although Pascal tended towards Jansenism, just before his death, he did receive Extreme Unction.

(Does that prove Pascal better than Python? 👿😄)

Ted Cruz pointed out how many Catholic sites have been discriminated against.
Discrimination deals with how we respect persons. A website is not a person, I cannot fathom how one would discriminate against a website other than “I don’t shop on XYZ because of their return policy” or “I don’t read MatlidaSiteNews because they are unreliable”.
