Any country music fans?

Over the last few months, I have been listening to country music a lot. I used to be more of a fan of rock music and classic rock, but so much of it seems so sad or angry. I find country music a lot more uplifting and generally favorable to traditional values and Christianity. What do you all think?

Dear friend

I like to listen to a bit of ‘stand by your man’ by Dolly Parton and also to other country singers (Dixy Chicks, etc etc).

I have a pretty much wide scope of music taste, from Irish Folk, Country Music, Pop, Classical, Hymns, Rock, Heavy Rock…there’s something for everyone in all parts of music.

There is something about music that can make the soul soar and inspire towards God that is also true of poetry, works of art usch as paintings and certain writings.

God is Creator and to those He gives gifts of creativity to should think long and hard about how they use that gift.

I am a fan of the old country and western singers like Johnny Cash, Don Williams, Glen Cambell, Kenny Rogers, Charlie Pride, Dr Hook, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynnette, Crystal Gale, Billy-Jo Spears etc.

I sure am, but theres too many to list, Dwight Yokam, Alan Jakson, Aaron Nevile, Tammy Whynette, Charlie Pride, Lori Morgan, Janie Frikie, and the mighty sound of Willie Nelson, love that song, think it’s called, “Good morning America” and "on the road again"etc, and there’s some Irish bands here I like as well.
And way back, Jim Reeves, Vernon Oxford, I used to listen to country music from the states on the BBC radio, in the 70’s.

Theres loads more, but I’ve drawn a blank, oh ! I can’t forget this mans music, Buck Owens.👍
 
Country music is the ONLY music I’ve listened to since high school. I like songs that have meaning to them, and so many country songs are “touching”.

I like almost all kinds of music…I am as much at home with listening to AC/DC sing Highway to Hell as I am going back to the days of yesteryear when you could hear Donna Fargo sing Happiest Girl in the Whole USA… or Tanya Tucker sing Delta Dawn…or Roy Clark sing Yesterday or Thank God and Greyhound you’re Gone! 🙂

I’m not so much of a fan of the new Country Stars…they seem as factory created in looks and sound just like Britany Spears, Jessica Simpson, etc…only with a “country” label attached.

I like much of the late 60s thru 80s stuff and some 90s…such as Garth Brooks and Dwight Yoakum…speaking of which, Dwights album from a few years back “GONE” ranks as one of my all time favorite Country albums ever made.

I miss the days of TV when it was not uncommon to see Kenny Rogers performing a duo with Dottie West or Dolly Parton. Me and family ALWAYS watched The Barbara Mandrell Show… Radio has really screwed over the Country greats and people like Willie and Merle arent shy about stating so either…plus TV is all about reality junk and no more wholesome variety with talented people.
 
Wow, memories. I go through phases of listening to it. Dwight, Chris LeDoux, Buck, of course Don Williams, Waylon Jennings, Alan Jackson, you name 'em. I used to work at the old World Famous Crazy Horse in Santa Ana, CA and was lucky enough to see many artists now gone while I was working in the bar. wow, seems like years and years ago. Oh and have to love the Irish music…any fans of The Fenians? lots of fun. 👍

I’ve listened to country all my life, and even played steel guitar in country bands for 25 years, but the new crop of country songs and singers are about as country as some of the rock music. There are a few good artists around, (Alan Jackson, George Strait, Le An Rhimes, etc. In general the music is getting more R rated all the time. On the recent CMA awards show, about every other word was either h— or d—. That turns me off in a second.
 
I’ve been a fan all my life, execpt during my high school years. (late 70’s) but returned in 1980.

My father listened to country music when I was a little kid, and he always had it playing on the radio. We had ONE country station for ALL NE Ohio in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. (WSLR 1350AM Akron) Sorry they are not around anymore. They had a STRONG signal.

We’d go out to the grandparents and my father would have WSLR on the radio. I listened to the music, but my two brothers would complain. My father said this one time: “I’m driving this car and if you want something different, get your own car.” “If you can’t listen, be quiet.” I listened and fell in love with it since.

Eariest songs I remember:

as a kid the sound of the beer can opening caught my attention.
Skip A Rope (1968) Henson Cargill
I just thought it was a fun song with a cool melody.
Harper Valley PTA (1968) Jeannie C. Riley
The neighbor girl next door had the whole album and played it a lot.
Pure Love (1974) Ronnie Milsap
I like the part about Cap’n Crunch in the morning.

My preferences, I like the traditional artists and sounds. I have resigned the fact that too much of today’s coutnry is TOO much relyed on artifical drum machines and doesn’t sound ‘real enough’.

I agree with your point that you made. Not to nit-pick but Stand By Your Man was Tammy Wynnette, not Dolly Parton.
 
I find most country to be respectable, but boring. Bluegrass is another story, though; I can actually get into it.
 
Give me a random country song and I probably won’t like it. However, I do enjoy good quality country music. I recall being very attached to a couple of pieces in my younger years.
 
I’m a listener. Country is the only secular pop music I listen to. I have seven stations programmed into my truck radio, and if one of them goes to commercial or plays an offensive song (of which there are many in this genre), I just punch the next button. One of the stations mixes in a lot of bluegrass, which I love.

Question: What do you get when you play country music backwards?

Answer: Your wife doesnt go off with your friend, your dog lives, your truck is fixed, your dad is not drunk, your family is together, you have money in the bank, you dont lose your home etc.

Most of what is called country today is nothing more than pop mainstream rock music, real country music is dead. Most of the so called singers are trashy unskilled phonys.

I do admire those who listen to the purely american country music i dont however listen to it. Christian rock band smight be your thing if normal rock gets you depressed. I however dont care much fopr that either.

I like secular country, rock, classical, and more. I love Christian rock and a few other Christian genres. I’ve noticed that country singers (Martina McBride is one example in “Blessed” and “God’s Will”) seem to be more open to discussing their faith in their music than rock singers are, and that’s part of what attracts me to country music.

I love Country…but lately my heart has been attracted to “The Dameans”…an excellent Catholic band…has anyone else discovered these guys? They went through Seminary in New Orleans…I believe at Notre Dame, but I could be wrong…if anyone is interested in their material and would like to purchase a cd…let me know, I have the links to the people that sell their stuff…trust me, it is Grade A.
