Hi,

My DH are going through a rough patch. I read a lot about the effects of daily prayer but don’t see any actual stories of how prayer has improved a marriage in trouble. I am skeptical to ask my husband to pray daily with me but if I know it has changed other marriages for the best, I might put myself out. It would be very awkward to pray in front of my husband but I am willing to try if I knew it would work.
thanks

My wife and I say the Our Father together every morning when I leave for work.

At times we have said rosaries together, and we go through periods where we say Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours together.

If you want to start praying together, it doesn’t have to replace your other prayer. Say a prayer of thanks, and then pray for the people you know who need prayer. You don’t have to pray specifically for each other, although that works, too.

Just start something, anything. It couldn’t hurt! You don’t have to focus on your troubles; just focus on the fact that praying together is a good thing.

See that’s the thing about prayer and faith, they don’t always work the way we want, but in God’s time.
Why don’t you start, by setting some time aside every day just to pray FOR your husband. That’s not saying…Lord, I don’t like the way he does x,y and z and could you please change this and that.
Pray for his safety, pray for his needs and his health. Thank God for him and thank God for the good qualities he has. Then pray for your marriage, pray for yourself.
If you feel it on your heart to pray with your husband, start small. Ask if he would mind saying the Our Father with you every night or a decade of the Rosary. You could start doing those things on your own and then invite him to join you.
This is one of the wonderful things about our God, we can talk to him anytime we want, and He will always listen!! He wants to hear our thoughts and fears, but I have found that I am happier with my prayer life, and really just with life, when I stop telling God how I want things done:blush: and just tell him what’s on my heart and let Him take it from there!

I pray with my fiance every night. I love it, having that quiet time together. Try to find a couple prayers to say together, don’t worry about doing spontaneous prayer in front of your spouse. Perhaps the Our Father and a few Hail Marys, or maybe a rosary. We say the Night prayers from Regnum Christi(a lay group that my fiance belongs to). Good luck with it! 👍

my finance and i have gone through some rough spots in the three years that we have known eachother. when we met, he was not a practicing Catholic (he is currently in the RCIA program at the parish we want to get married at) but was interested. he started attending church with me, and now, when we have long car rides, we pray the rosary together. in the evenings, when we are hanging out alone, we will pray a rosary together. it keeps our minds more pure, and helps to avoid temptations. when we’re going through a tough time, we pray for help and guidance. at first it was a little awkward to pray infront of him, but i have grown to love it, and it has really helped our relationship!!!

our faith is what has drawn us closer together, and by praying together, we are drawn even closer. =]

2-3 Lents ago, I wanted to make it our sacrifice to pray together daily. I met with high resistance. I tried again last year, still met resistance (all the while praying for help to have him want to). Over last summer when I asked him to pray the Rosary in the evenings with the kids and I he said no, but then when the kids asked and said they thought it would make him a ‘Super-Dad’ he accepted and now gets upset if we do it without him. It has brought the whole family closer as we do scripture with the mysteries and give intentions before we start.

Like a PP said, even if he doesn’t want to just pray for him and it’ll happen eventually. It only took 30 some years for St Augustine to come around from his poor mother’s prayers. I feel lucky indeed that I only had to hold out for 2 years.

My DH & I pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin daily. It is part of being enrolled on the Brown Scapular. For those who are uncomfortable with the idea of praying aloud with another, check this out. www.coupleprayer.org Hope it helps.

Peace,
Linda
