I live in the Marquette area and go to a Roman Catholic parish. Are there any Eastern Catholic parishes near me? I know there is a Ukrainian monestary in the Keweenaw, but that’s too far for me. I’m looking for an Eastern Catholic parish. Does anyone know of one?

Besides Holy Transfiguration Skete in the UP, there are several Ukrainian Catholic parishes in the Detroit area, as well as Grand Rapids and Plymouth/Northville. If you are interested in starting up a mission, there are clergy in the state who might be able to help getting started.

There are directories online to make sure, but the answer is probably a “no”.

Immigrants from Eastern Catholic regions of Europe didn’t settle in upper Michigan in great enough numbers to start churches of their rite there. Most took jobs in steel mills and coal mines.

And when the mills closed in the rust belt in the 70s/80s, few moved to upper Michigan, those that left Pa. and the other rust belt locales moved south- where you’ll also see some Eastern Catholic churches.

There seems to be a Greek Orthodox church a few blocks from my campus in Upper Michigan, so I was wondering if maybe there were some Eastern Catholic parishes also. There doesn’t seem to be, but there is a monastery in the Keweenaw which is a Ukrainian Byzantine monastery, which I think I mentioned earlier.
