I was wondering if anyone has any references pertaining to any published refutations in the Evangelical world against the fear oriented propoganda of both/either the Boettner or Chick anti-catholic publications? I already have some Catholic publications, including “Catholicism & Fundamentalism” by Karl Keating, but since all things catholic are suspicious, I am looking specifically for Evangelical sources.

I have a heated family matter taking place, and although I know that prayer right now is my best defense, which I have stated elsewhere in the forum, I would none the less appreciate any help with this.

Thanks and God Bless,
Jeanette

Boettner sometimes uses arguments similar to those in Ralph Woodrow’s “Babylon Mystery Religion.”

Ralph Woodrow published a RETRACTION of this work in This Rock and you can find it here on-line! His critique of his own former work addresses SOME of Boettner and Chick’s attacks.

Here you go

Here’s an article about Cornerstone and Christianity Today’s refutation of Chick and Rivera. Even if you don’t read the whole thing it is good to know that there are Evangelical Protestants who don’t want to be associated with either one of these men. It’s too bad they haven’t disassociated themselves from Lorraine Boettner’s rabid and disgusting anti-Catholicism. They overlooked this part of his “ministry” completely when he died, citing instead his other Calvinist theological writings.

Thank you both for your links. They were very helpful. It seems I spend most of my time now researching and reading everything I can find of this nature. Too bad I hate debate, or this would be invigorating for me; as it is, I find it an exercise filled with anxiety, but I press forward!

God Bless,
Jeanette

I don’t have any “official” references, but I can assure all, as a former evangelical fundamentalist protestant, that the poisonous anti-Catholic bigotry exemplified by Chick and ilk are not representative of evangelical fundamentalist protestantism.

I recall being horrified when reading such propaganda. Even though I was anti-Catholic at the time, I was still smart enough to know better. That kind of prejudice is profoundly low-brow. Let’s call it “Neanderthal Anti-Catholicism”…

Either Boettner or Chick’s sister is a convert to the FAITH. I think that’s the best discredit that’s out there.

It is important to note that “mainstream Christianity” seems to embrace these psycho writings as MANY “Christian” bookstores carry them. A buddy of mine used to work at our local “Christian” bookstore and he said he was mad that they carried Chick Tracts, including the ones with anti-Catholic rhetoric and lies.

Are you thinking of James White’s sister . . . .? I forget her name; she was on The Journey Home, and they carefully shielded her brother’s identity.

Jeanette,

I don’t know about published stuff–I do know that several evangelical organizations researched the Alberto Rivera story (a supposed former Jesuit promoted by Chick) and found it to be a fake. Perhaps others can point you to the places where this has been done.

Perhaps I should write such a book . . . I have been thinking of writing an introduction to Catholicism for evangelicals and getting it published with IVP (a major evangelical publishing company). A book refuting Boettner and Chick from a moderate evangelical point of view would be less fun but perhaps needed!

For what it’s worth, I’d be happy to answer any specific questions to the best of my ability. I’m an evangelical (at least I consider myself one, though being an Episcopalian I might be suspect to many!) and have recently earned a Ph.D. in church history from Duke University, specializing in the Reformation. I’ve read Boettner (though it was years ago and I have no wish to repeat the painful experience) and a number of Chick tracts. I have seriously considered converting to Catholicism but so far have always decided that I could not do so. As you can see if you look at many of my posts, I often argue against Catholic positions (particularly against what I think are overly simplistic arguments for Catholicism–I have a lot of respect for good Catholic theology such as that of the current Pope, or the last one too for that matter). I hope this doesn’t sound like self-adulation, but I think I’m about as balanced a voice on this subject as you’ll find, and I do claim to know something about the issues. Send me a private message if I can be of any assistance. I believe strongly that Catholics and evangelicals have a lot to learn from each other and need to overcome the mistrust of the past. I’d love to do anything to promote that cause.

Edwin-

I think you should write the book! The Christian world needs a little more understanding, a lot more love and a lot less hate. The world stopped believing in Christ when the Christians stopped loving each other. We opened a door for the enemy that hasn’t been able to be closed for 500 years.

A book that explains things in an honest and respectful way can only help towards the goal of mutual understanding and love, (even if we may never agree on everything), and that effort on your part would be a most pleasing sacrifice to the Lord!

It must grieve him so to see his family feuding like we do. I know how much pain is caused just in my little family, multiply that by about a billion or so, you can imagine what suffering we cause our Lord.

My vote is go for it! 👍

Christian Research Institute has published stuff refuting Jack Chick nonsense from time to time, like his John Todd junk.

There is also the Rebecca Brown nonsense

Wow! Ask and ye shall receive! 🙂

You’ve given me enough to keep me busy for quite awhile! I started going through some of them, I think I’ll have to pace myself for a couple of days here!

Thanks a lot, 👍

My father informed me that my mother just received all her Chick Publications in the mail, a whole box full of them. You can imagine how horrified I am that she is falling prey to this madman and is going to try to use his information against me! And when someone gets to this point, there is no reasoning with them.

That is why I am trying to arm myself with as much information as I can get a hold of that will be able to discredit Chick and Boettner (which she’s been reading his book also). She also has some kind of video tape she ordered from the internet that she showed my father which presents a lot of Mexican Catholics worshipping Mary statues in a huge procession with a lot of zeal.

My father has so far been pretty calm about my conversion, but he was very disturbed by this tape, although he couldn’t tell me who made it or very many details, just the same stuff about Babylonian goddess worship that always comes up. Evidently it was extremely anti-catholic and very convincing. 😦

Now please don’t anybody start throwing eggs here or calling for my excumminication. But…

I would suggest to all who want to get involved in apologetics to read Boettner’s book. If for no other reason, you should get one heck of a laugh out of it.

But seriously, I have found many who plagerize Boettner to no end. They might dress up the style ( Boettner writes like a sophomore in High School) but you can find where and also see tha they lack the same citing as he does. This will help in instances where you come across some of that garbage.

Although recently new to the Apologetics arena, I have found that by reading the game plan of the enemy, If you can recognize which “playbook” it comes out of, you can throw all kinds of curves that either shut them up or send them packing.

If nothing else consider it Fides ad facetius et comicus

To defend against assertions made by Boettner simply ask for the primary source of the assertion. Boettner was lousy at it. In fact, I would assert that he made most of it up just to see if it would fly. Simple google searches can dispute most of what he has written.

As to Chick. If your mom asks about the Jesuit weapons stockpile, just tell you haven’t gotten your decoder ring yet so you can’t deny or confirm that little tidbit.

As to the tape and the “Babylonian” thing, it’s a similis hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. ( similar therfore because of)

Jeanette, hang in their. It’s not as tough as it seems. I think that most of the “cradle catholics” will agree with me, there’s really nothing new for them to throw at the Church, and none of it has stuck so far. We’ve been hearing it all of our lives. I for one would really enjoy somebody coming up with something new just to put a little spice in it.

Her name is Patty Bonds, she occasionally posts on Patrick Madrid’s blog at surprisedbytruth.com

Well, I’m not an Evangelical, but I did write a book refuting Boettner’s infamous “list”. 🙂

You can read the whole thing on-line here: christianforums.com/t922262-the-boettner-list-fact-or-fiction.html
Excellent, excellent, excellent. Very helpful. Easy to read and understand.

I’ve never read Boettner but the same list appears in Finis Dake’s “God’s Plan For Man”. He claims to have written the list. I’ve had a few heated debates about some of it in the past!
