Any Evangelicals Discredit Boettner & Chick?

I would suggest to all who want to get involved in apologetics to read Boettner’s book. If for no other reason, you should get one heck of a laugh out of it.

But seriously, I have found many who plagerize Boettner to no end. They might dress up the style ( Boettner writes like a sophomore in High School) but you can find where and also see tha they lack the same citing as he does. This will help in instances where you come across some of that garbage.

Although recently new to the Apologetics arena, I have found that by reading the game plan of the enemy, If you can recognize which “playbook” it comes out of, you can throw all kinds of curves that either shut them up or send them packing.

If nothing else consider it Fides ad facetius et comicus

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately, the Protestants don’t do the same. They neglect to do their homework, which leads to such gross misrepresentations. I think we should be smarter, always prepared to give an answer, studying to show ourselves approved.

I was given a copy of Roman Catholicism by a young (26-year-old) Pentecostal minister friend (really: great guy – student of my DH) when I became Catholic. After reading it, I threw it out! When I later asked the young Reverend if he knew what a scabrous book that was, he replied: “Yes! I wanted you to know what people say about you!”

One of the worst mistakes I ever made was tossing Boettner’s book into trash. But of course, I did that before I was unwillingly thrust into apologetics.

The good news is that you can get this stuff cheap. Go to AMAZON and get them used. Real cheap. That way, you’re not giving any more money to the authors of this garbage, but you have what you need to defend your faith.

To refute Boettner simply demand proof of his famous inventions list. Frankly, I never heard of him until a catholic asked me about him.

I would put one constraint on this recommendation by highly recommending that one has a strong grounding/education in the Faith. Just like approaching such books as the DaVinci Code, we need to know our gameplan before we can begin learning theirs.

I’m not sure if anyone so far has mentioned Alexander Hislop’s *The Two Babylons. *It’s the source for most of the “Babylonian mystery religion” garbage. It’s historically nonsense, but unfortunately a lot of fundamentalists latch on to it.

Boettner is a bit better (i.e., at least 60% of his arguments have some tangential relationship with reality!). But it’s still very poor stuff.

The best criticism of Catholicism I know remains Martin Chemnitz’s *Examination of the Council of Trent (written right after the Council in the late 16th century). *He deals with the issues seriously and makes careful distinctions. Since then it’s pretty much been downhill. The Protestants who have something to say worth saying usually don’t waste their time on anti-Catholic polemic.

I think in the long run the best thing you can do is live out your faith and let your family see that you continue to love and serve Jesus as a Catholic. I’m in no position to give you advice on this, since I myself backed away from converting to Catholicism.

I agree with you. I guess my panic, so to speak, is just wanting to know exactly what it is that they’re being fed by these misrepresentations, what they’re actually believing and what they’re not. It’s hard to be prepared to answer questions that come out of crazy land, if you’re not prepared with what is in crazy land!

But you’re right, I do have to live my faith well. I have to tell you, it’s weird being in this phase of the conversion. The hardest part is behind me. Having made the decision to convert was such a HUGE deal, but the peace and freedom I feel inside is unbelievable! I’m finding my love for Christ is growing by leaps and bounds, like being “born again”, again! A PEARL OF GREAT PRICE! If the Spirit moves you again, take the leap, no matter what’s going on around you, inside you won’t regret it!
