That is the one!! Thank you for that title! I think I was maybe 12 when I saw that episode and it terrified me! We had just moved out to the country a year before and our house set far off the main road down a long driveway. I probably slept with my eyes open all night!Funny that you should mention that, I have an odd history with that episode.
It was titled “An Unlocked Window” (you can view the whole episode on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=W7P-Psa8r8U), about an undercover female police officer who poses as a nurse to catch a serial killer who is preying on nurses. When it first aired on February 15, 1965, I was 6 years old. I was watching it in a darkened living room with my grandmother, and the suspense nearly drove me crazy. As the twist in the ending was revealed, it scared me so much I ran headlong out of the room and hid in, or possibly under, my bed. After that, my folks had a conversation in which it was decided that I was too young to watch Mr. Hitchcock’s show. I had nightmares about that ending that recurred over and over for months.
One night later in the year, I woke up and got out of my bed to ask for a glass of water. In my pajamas, I tiptoed into the darkened living room, which was lit only by our black and white television set that my grandmother was sitting and watching, like before. Like a recurring bad dream where you know what is about to happen just before it happens, I peeked at the TV and saw the exact same ending sequence (in summer rerun), right at the climax, that had freaked me out the last time. I screamed at the top of my lungs and woke the rest of the house up.
The house that is shown in the exterior is the same house (on the Universal Studios backlot) that is used for Norman Bates’ house in “Psycho,” incidentally.
I don’t have a computer right now. Just my smartphone. Those two episodes “The Jar” and “The Unlocked Window” are the only 2 episodes I remember.
Thanks for the other link about Hitchcock and his Catholicism. I believe he was a man of faith intrigued by man’s condition.
What a coincidence you found that article!
