Any fans of Alfred Hitchcock?

Bad as it may be, I have to hold *Family Plot *in a soft spot – It is the only one of his films that I saw in its first run theatrical release.

I am also of a generation to have been able to appreciate the 1983 “recovery” of the five “lost Hitchcocks” – *Rope, Rear Window, Vertigo, The Trouble With Harry, *and the remake of *The Man Who Knew Too Much *-- And enjoy them for the first time in the theater as well.

I have never heard of the recovery of the 5 lost Hitchcocks.
Care to educate me.
The Trouble With Harry is another on my list of least favorites.
Topaz and Torn Curtain were 2 others I had a hard time with.

They’d not really been “lost” – Hitch withheld them from the public for a time,apparently as in investment of sorts.

What’s your most memorable Hitch flick? I think of the fear that clung for years after one in particular, nothing for me being more replete with skin-crawling revulsion than…“FRENZY!” Thought I was going to say “Psycho” didn’t ya? This is Hitchcock that must be appreciated through noting Hitch’s daddy was a greengrocer, so the easy familiarity with a truck full of 'taters and loading docks is complemented with his love of the little people like the heart-of-gold barmaid. This is a tricky bit, with other forays into psychology being somewhat overwrought, like “Vertigo” or “Spellbound” but his depiction of the charming and disarming sociopath-next-door is spot-on. Aaron Copland wrote, “Fanfare for the Common Man” but the unpleasant “Frenzy” is Hitchcock’s “Requiem for the Common Man.”

I thought Jon Finch, an underrated actor whose promising career was derailed by illness (he had to withdraw from the film “Alien” when he collapsed on the set from what was later diagnosed as diabetes), was very good in that.

I have to turn my eyes away during the scene when the psychopath (Barry Foster) actually strangles Richard Blaney’s (Jon Finch) ex-wife (Barbara Leigh-Hunt). It’s just too heartbreaking to bear, as she begins to pray.

This Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, there will be a Hitchcock-a-thon on TCM starting at 5:30 am eastern. Can’t wait to see which movies have been chosen for the all day Hitchcock festival!

I saw the lineup of films by Hitchcock this Friday on TCM.
The first one early in the morning is The Lady Vanishes. Shadow of a Doubt, Saboteur, Marnie and The Birds and I think Psycho will be on not in that particular order.
