I was wondering if there were any former pro-abortion people here, especially those who used to be that way even though they were still nominally Catholic at the time. The reason I ask is, I’m curious to learn what caused you to change your mind.

Or if anyone knows someone else who went through that and can share the story, your (name removed by moderator)ut would be appreciated as well. 😃 Thanks in advance.

Back before I returned to my faith I used to think that, although I thought it was wrong, abortion was up to each individual who would have to live with their own conscience. Since returning to the Catholic Church I have learned so much about our reponsibility as Catholics to protect all life, from conception until natural death.
God, I’m sorry for the apathy I once embraced on this subject, but thanks to Your grace it’s gone now.

My mother is. She says she was Pro-Choice until she had me. She said as soon as she saw my face, she couldn’t understand why a woman would kill her child.

When I first was pro-choice, I had no concept of the unformed child in the womb, and since I had all that testosterone pulsing through my veins, I knew I would probably need abortion at a young age. Later, I realized it was a bad idea, so I agreed abortion was wrong after the heart began to beat. As late as a year or two ago, when there was a multiple rape case in my state, I even called in to a talk show and said that if that poor girl had been my daughter, I wouldn’t blame her for aborting that child (if in fact she did conceive); I even told my Priest this in confession. Now, I suppose all abortion is wrong because how does anyone know how it would feel to be aborted. Again, I called in to a talk show and said that if people were told that abortion would be like chopping a person to pieces with a machete or cutting that person up with a chainsaw, abortion would end … today!

If you try to kill a baby bear and its mom sees you you’ll be the one who gets ripped to pieces. Animals are better mothers that humans. The safest place for a baby used to be in its mother’s womb. No more. Now it’s a dangerous place for a baby to be.

The pro-choice arguments I heard back in the 90s- abortion rights were suppose to be about safety and health. Most of the pro-life movement (I came in contact with) would agree that abortion as birth control was irresponsible.

Well, fast forward to college: My best friend tells me if she were to get pregnant (by her long time boyfriend who she was planning to marry) she would get an abortion and not even tell him.

WHOA! When did that become acceptable? And when in the world did it become acceptable to tell your CATHOLIC friend such a thing as though she wouldn’t find it disgusting?

That was the moment things started changing for me.

I was. 😦

I stopped practicing my faith seriously at about 14. I thought that abortion was wrong, and that I could never have an abortion…but I could not impose* my *view on others. I believe many people feel the same way. “I’m personally opposed but I could never impose my views on others”

My DH was always pro-life, even before he reverted to the Church.

I think I started coming becoming more convinced that abortion was wrong when I became pregnant with my first child. Up until then, I didn’t understand about child development in the womb.

I was about 4 month pregnant and I felt this rhythmic fluttering in my abdomen. Baby wasn’t kicking, he had hiccups. This “blob of tissue” who could not survive out of the womb yet, was coordinated enough to hiccup.

Even before the hiccups, the changes that my body went through that make no sense really unless they are to protect baby. My sense of smell became so accute. That happens to protect baby from harmful things, be it spoiled food, or toxic substances.

When I was pregnant with DD, we had 2 sonograms, 1 to date the pregnancy, and the 20 week scan. My pregnancy was dated at 8 weeks, meaning that baby was conceived only 6 weeks prior. She had a little head and body and arm buds, and a heart beat. Most importantly a little heartbeat.

At about 20 weeks we had another scan. DS was with me. DD was in an odd position and wouldn’t turn. DS spoke and baby reacted and turned. She was used to his voice, he was always right around me and at her level.

I also returned to practicing the faith while pregnant with DD.

I had a friend who was sexually active as well. Sometimes if they had no “protection” they would still have relations.
She told me she would be in a panic until her period would come. She said she would have an abortion, most definitely if she became pregnant…fear of her parents was her reason. I remember asking how she could love her boyfriend yet want to abort his children. She was afraid of what her parents would say, but she wasn’t afraid of what her boyfriend would say.

I was pro-choice.

My theory was this. I personally felt abortion was wrong but I maintained that I had no right to tell others they couldn’t have an abortion.

What changed my mind was accepting the fact that a ‘fetus’ is a human being. Whether or not that human is fully formed is immaterial. The moment sperm fertilizes egg you have a human being and deliberately destroying that human being is murder, period and murder is never acceptable or neutral.

I am a child of the 60’s and 70’s. Choice sounded good to me. Why should a woman not be able to choose what happens to her body. I then became pregant with my 1st child. I was having some problems and they were checking for down syndome. I was 5 months along and they would have aborted my child. I saw the ultrasound and was
forever changed. I’m very pro life now. We are even taking a group to the March for life next week. God changed my heart and I’m forever grateful.😃 My son is now 25 years old and healthy.👍 Even if he wasn’t I knew I would protect him no matter what. When I tell that story I’m always reminded God has way better plans for me than I do for myself.

After much difficulty, I would like to say that I hereby impose this on anyone who chooses to shirk his/her duty to at least share his/her views about abortion: Is it wrong to speak up if you know someone might be saved from death … if only you would say at least one word like “No?” “No, I don’t agree with abortion. I believe it’s wrong.” That’s all. Just ten words, just ten words could change the course of history, for the better, for the world!

This is also my experience exactly.

The Holy Spirit changed me completely in this matter. No human being preached to me. As soon as I embraced Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour I had this awesome experience that I sometimes just woke up in the morning and my views on certain things were totally changed. (women in priesthood, contraception and abortion)
No one preached to me on abortion - heck in my country no one even talks about it. its that common and socially acceptable.

When Jesus comes into your heart so does the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit brings the gift of wisdom and knowlege etc… The scales fall from one’s eyes and you wake up and see the hidden structures in reality… and you see how human-made systems of thought don’t correspond or are logical.

So yes I was pro-choice and the Holy Spirit made me pro-Life. Now I am one of those few people who pray the rosary infront of death clinics while angry secular people pass us by and give us the finger.

Abortion is reductionism. its the holocaust of our time, and people are blind. Those of us who know whats going on shall not judge others but seek to make awareness.

The when and how question about my change of heart is an interesting one.I can’t remember any definite moment of epiphany. I remember seeing the sonogram of my godson and being totally amazed. But even that wasn’t a decisive moment. For me the exception to no abortion was in the case of rape. As I look back, there were so many lies I accepted about many issues.
As I opened myself up to TRUTH and searched for her regardless of the cost, I found my way back to the Church, and then there was a process of learning not what the Church teaches but WHY. It was in that learning that I not only accepted but embraced and fell in love with Church teaching - from no ordination of women, to priestly celebacy to no gay marriage to no abortion for any reason.During that time, I guess I came to understand and embrace my own dignity as a human person and thus that of every human being.I learned that God loves me as He created me, and so too others. Never really thought of it before, but I guess it was sort of the case for me that I didn’t really love myself so how could I love anyone else. Once I realized God loves me, I was able to love me.And now that I can love myself- I can love others.

With real love and real compassion- there’s just no room for excusing the killing of anyone for any reason. Good question- thanks for asking.

Yup, I was pro-choice. I basically began to read everything possible by pro-lifers and even though I didn’t like them (I thought at that time in my life they were all religious nuts and lunatics) I began to agree with them. Now, I think alot of people on the pro-life side are still nuts but I do agree with them on abortion.

Insanity and Genius are two sides of the same coin? 😉

The pro-choice crowd likes to say that abortion is a private, painful, personal, tough choice that a woman will struggle with. This is to make it seem as though it is some sort of noble path that a woman must take when faced with an unwanted pregnancy. They say “no woman wants to get an abortion. It’s the most difficult decision she’ll ever have to make.”

I would say for the great majority of women this is true. But there are definitely women out there who think it’s no big deal. My best friend in middle/high school has the complete opposite values of me. We both grew apart from God and partied/made bad choices in high school, but after high school I found the Lord again and turned my life around, while she went the complete opposite direction, did every drug you can think of, sex with multiple partners, became agnostic, etc. She knows I am a Christian and pro-life, and a few months ago, she casually mentioned to me that she was a couple of weeks late on her period. I asked her in shock if she had unprotected sex with someone and she said yes. I asked her why the heck she hadn’t taken a pregnancy test yet and she said “I don’t know…I just don’t want to know…” And I said, “Well you need to go get one TONIGHT and take it ASAP, you can’t just ignore this, you need to know if you are pregnant!” and she says “Yeah…what’s the cut off date to get an abortion?” like it was asking what the deadline was for returning a movie. I said to her “Do not even ask me that. You know I do not believe in that. Please, do not consider getting an abortion. Please, please, please, do not do that. There is adoption, oh my goodness, I would adopt your baby, just please don’t kill it.” I also urged her to STOP having unprotected sex. I know contraception is against God, but she will not stop having sex, she has no values system, and it would kill me if my childhood friend were to conceive and have an abortion. I would feel better if she would use it.

Anyway, she ended up not being pregnant, but like you, the casual way she broached the subject absolutely floored me.

Oh, and to add, I always considered myself pro-life, even when I was very, very far away from God. I, however, looked at it like, “If you’re grown up enough to have sex, you’re grown up enough to take responsibility and have a baby.” I thought rape was an exception for an abortion. However, that was the wrong way to look at it. No matter how a child is conceived, he/she has the right to be born. If someone had told me that, I would have believed it, but no one did and I didn’t think about it much.

When I was going through my “rebel” years, I was pro-choice. But when I started reading more, and understanding the importance of life, I changed my position to pro-life. I just can’t bare to think of anyone who would kill an unborn and innocent child who could have a wonderful future in front of them.
