I just finished Father Elijah, and it was stinkin’ awesome.

I have read the Pierced by a Sword, Conceived Without Sin, House of Gold books and they were pretty good.

I am working on Chesterton - Orthodoxy right now and am looking for another fictional romp through the catholic universe.

What attracts me to the stated four books above is their rabid unabashed Catholic world view throughout the novels. I am interested in hearing your fave “Catholic fiction.” Especially the ones that are unapologetic of the Catholic Church.

I have heard about “Lord of the World” by Benson was good, any seconds on that one?

Try some Flannery O’Connor.

Novels: Wise Blood, 1952 The Violent Bear It Away, 1960

Short story collections: A Good Man Is Hard to Find, 1955, Everything That Rises Must Converge, 1965, The Complete Stories, 1971

To be honest I enjoy Virginia Woolf, her piece Orlando was truly amazing.

Brideshead Revisited and A Handful of Dust, both by Evelyn Waugh. Read Brideshead first.

Try some Flannery O’Connor.

I strongly second PoliSciProf’s suggestion “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”: O’Connor was way ahead of her time.

I’ll second it.

A lot of the Catholic-y authors I’ve read were Anglican, hope you don’t mind if I recommend Charles Williams; besides G.K. Chesterton, he is the closest thing to “Stinkin’ awesome” that I’ve come across. “The Greater Trumps”, “Place of the Lion”, “Descent Into Hell” are some favorites.

I’ve been wanting to read Waugh for years, especially after I decided to convert. I’m going to start with Brideshead. I’ve heard Sword of Honour is good, too, and quite Catholic.

As far as Lord of the World, I haven’t read it yet. I want to, though. I read the final page, or final two pages. Whoa.

Island of the world - Michael D O’Brien (This book is great)
Theophilos - Michael D O’Brien
Eclipse of the sun - Michael D O’Brien
Plague Journal - Michael D O’Brien
Stangers and Sojourners - Michael D O’Brien
Sophia House - Michael D O’Brien
The Fathers Tale - Michael D O’Brien
The Trials and Triumph Trilogy - Kenneth Nowell

What do you think of this list?

Well, in light of the fact that the Catechism is on here, I can think of one book that is conspicuously absent 😃 but wow, this is a great resource. Thanks for posting this!

Well, then I’d be right there with SonSearcher . . .admitting I’m only at about 5 . . . (but only because we read the Divine Comedy in college . . . .)
