I spent about two periods of several years at a time going to live show after live show. Had many times when I was deaf for a couple days after. Sometimes I wore ear plugs, sometimes I forgot. The weirdest part is that I apparently have robust hearing because even after all that I still hear quite well, but my husband who would maybe accompany me to one show per year and sit way back was heading for deaf since his 30s. His parents were also hard of hearing and would turn the TV up so loud you could hear it three rooms away, so like everything else, it seems to be genes at play.

My wife has hearing issue due to all the concerts she attended and the loud music she still listens to, I think.

I noticed the volume levels on a lot of these bands seems to be less loud these days. I think the production and sound crews are realizing the damage they done to people’s hearing over the years. Still loud but not as loud. I would still bring ear plugs with me.

I’ve been to somewhere between 50 to probably 100 shows in my life. Lost count. That’s my band, friend’s bands on the local scene (my band had been an opener for some bigger Metal bands) major touring acts and etc. Also have worked in auto shops for years. Didn’t wear ear protection a lot back in the day and now have some hearing loss at the higher frequency level. Had it checked and the specialist said it was from either air tools or firearms. I always wore ear protection when I went to the range, though.

I’ve gone to way more concerts than my husband has. I often went weekly to underground concerts in my teens yet other than occasional tinnitus, I have great hearing. My poor husband is starting to have some problems. However, he was exposed to power saws and tools for years…with no hearing protection provided or used. We are in our 60’s and most likely, within about five years he will need hearing aids. The good news is hearing aides are much smaller, more tunable to various frequencies and you can control them with your phone for various areas…restaurants vs movies vs living room. We are already looking at the various types available. Yikes, expensive! At least we have an idea of what we need to save!

Ahh, yes, I was figuring with that name you were either a bass player or possibly an expert fisherman. 😉

Lol. I get the fishermen one a lot. Then I’m like nope, I am a musician. Although I got to admit there is not quite as relaxing as setting on a quiet lake in a boat with a fishing pole in your hands. When my Grandma was still alive she had an 80-acre piece of property that she lived on about an hour to an hour and a half north of Grand Rapids Mi. There was a private lake on the back of the property in the woods. Her farm and one other backed up to it. I used to set on that lake in a boat. It was so peaceful. 🙂
