Home schooling is wonderful. It brings your family together, it helps you to be more patient if you are the teacher, and it helps you know what your children are learning. I have home schooled all my life except for pre-school, and I am sure it has helped me for the better both morally and spiritually speaking. However, home schooling is a double-edged sword.
Home schooling can either make or break your children’s academic careers. Though it is wonderful, just like any other type of schooling (Private or public), it can fail horrendously. I come from such a story. My mother has been suffering from depression for years, so she wouldn’t make us do school. At the beginning of the school year we would go on a very tight and effective school schedule, yes, but after a few weeks it would always fall apart. And even if it didn’t she is terrible at math and science and she would have been no help as soon as we started high school. You have to be ready to become an effective teacher. If you cannot do this then do your children a favor and send them to a public or private school. My future could be completely destroyed right now if I hadn’t picked myself up and made myself do school when I was fourteen. Unfortunately I will not be able to graduate with Seton or any Catholic home schooling programs I started with, but I will hopefully be getting my GED this Spring (I’m sixteen in case you were wondering) and I plan to do the SAT’s and enroll in Benedictine College where I am thinking of majoring in education and history so I can become a high school history teacher. I could be so much further ahead right now if I had a teacher there to make sure I did school and that I learned everything all those years ago, but I didn’t. Make sure you teach your kids or do them a favor and let someone else do it for you.
Please do not let this scare you. I do not want to scare you out of home schooling because it really is wonderful when done correctly. But I want you to think hard about it and ask yourself and your spouse if you are ready to become teachers. Being a teacher is a huge responsibility, and it is an important one.
