Dear toddy,

Perhaps you and I are reading the Legion Handbook in a different way. It seems to me, the servant of God Frank Duff was inspired by the Holy Spirit to gather together with his parish priest and a small group who had consecrated themselves to Jesus through Mary and prayed to the Holy Spirit for Guidance and then prayed the Rosary, before setting out on any Legionary work.

The Handbook was written later, and was revised after the Second Vatican Council; the early pages of the Handbook describe the Legion’s Origin, Object, and Spirit. If you re-read the Handbook, I believe you will learn more about God’s Plan for Evangelization. It is so important for all of us to be growing ourselves in that intimate union with Christ as Mary did before we begin attempting to give Him to others.

There really is a danger for persons to begin “evangelizing” when they are still very much “of the world” in their spirit. We cannot give what we do not have. Only God can “convert” anyone. Without God’s Grace we can do nothing. (cf Jn 15:5). The weekly meetings of the Legion begin as that first meeting the Servant of God Frank Duff described: Prayer to the Holy Spirit and the Rosary. This is the beginning of our training, but there is far more in the Handbook and the other writings of Servant of God Frank Duff.

You may want to read the “Allocutio” given in May 2018 on “Mary and the Holy Spirit” by the Spiritual Director of the Concillium in Dublin. You can read it HERE. The official website of the Legion of Mary is a good source. The causes for Canonization are in Rome for three Legionaries so far: Servant of God Frank Duff, Venerable Edel Quinn (whom he sent to Africa to begin the Legion there) and Servant of God Alphonsus Lamb (whom he sent to Latin America) . Their biographies are testimony to God’s work in and through them.

I’m grateful for your replies, toddy. Perhaps you’ve already read and been inspired by the holiness of the lay man Frank Duff and these two young Legionaries all being studied for canonization. I hope they will be canonized – for the Church needs the witness of God’s work on earth by the power of His Holy Spirit, bringing Jesus through Mary to the world.
