I started a little exercise program for Lent. I am watching a 1/2 hour of a movie every day during my exercise. So far I have completed watching:
The Passion
Into Great Silence.
Next up is Amazing Grace. I need to line up my next movie after that … anyone have any other suggestions for a good movie to watch during Lent?

*Faustina – *a Polish film on the life of St. Faustina Kowalska – very moving!

we have chosen for our lenten dinner and a movie nights
Miracle at Moreau
Movie on Fatima (don’t know the name)
Old movie on Lourdes (both of these starred Jennifer Jones but I cant remember the titles)
10 Commandments, the recent animated version newly released on DVD

those longer than an hour will be played over 2 nights.

Song of Bernadette is one of the Lourdes ones. Then there are other Saint-themed movies like ‘Therese’, or ‘Joan of Arc’ (only the Ingrid Bergman or the silent movie versions please, the rest aren’t good at all). There’s ‘Brother Sun and Sister Moon’ about Sts Francis and Clare, about which opinion seems to be somewhat divided.

Are you thinking of ‘Prince of Egypt’ as the animated movie? That’s a good one.

I’d recommend the ORIGINAL 10 Commandments as well (Cecil B De Mille), not to mention ‘Greatest Story Ever Told’ and ‘Jesus of Nazareth’, ‘The Robe’, even more tangential ones like “Quo Vadis” and ‘Ben Hur’.

Then there’s other good Catholic-themed movies like ‘Bells of St Mary’s’ and ‘Going My Way’ (both starring Bing Crosby). Or ‘The Scarlet and the Black’ or ‘Shoes of the Fisherman’. Not specifically Easter-themed, but good for increasing the faith anyway.

Or how about the recent one about John Paul II: ‘Karol: The Man who became Pope’ (I think that’s the title).

Well, here’s a few of what I have at home, and recommend;

Jesus of Nazareth
The Passion
The Song of Bernadette, staring Jennifer Jones.
The Miracle of Fatima
Damion (The story of Father Damion, and his work among the lepers)

A Man for All Seasons. (Excellent story of St. Thomas Moore.)

Devil at 4 O’Clock, staring Spencer Tracy.

Pope John Paul II, staring John Voight.

Little Margaret: God’s Cinderella. (The acting isn’t all that good, but the story is well worth learning about)

Any movie by St. Luke Productions, except St. Theresa. They really blew that movie by using the wrong actress for Theresa’s early years.

I think most of these are available through the Leaflet Missal Company… (link below)…

“Jesus of Nazareth”

“Bernadette: Her vision became a legend” (this film was shown, daily at the shrine in Lourdes, France)

“The Passion of Bernadette” (sequel to above film)

“Therese” (story of St. Therese of Lisieux)

“The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima”

“Faustina”

“Mother Teresa” (starring Olivia Hussey)

“Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II”

All great films… Enjoy!

Padre Pio, Miracle Man is a great one. I haven’t watched it in a year, but I love it!

Thank you all for the suggestions. These are great. Now I just need to figure out how to gets my hands on some of these titles.

While not quite the traditional film that others have already suggested, you could watch “Chocolat” and get a Johnny Depp fix, while reading “Chocolate for Lent” (reviewed at this site: catholicmom.com/lentbook.htm There are some other good Lenten picks there, too!

By far, the best Pope John Paul II movie I’ve seen is “Karol: Un uomo diventato Papa” (“Karol: A Man Who Became Pope”). It was made by an Italian company but with a mostly Polish cast, and filmed in English (strangely enough! LOL :whacky: )

Truly, I can’t say enough good things about this film. I believe it’s available on Amazon, if you’re interested.

God bless!

There is THE BIBLE: IN THE BEGINNING which deals with Creation through the sacrifice of Isaac.

And IN THIS HOUSE OF BREDE with Diana Rigg, the story of a successful career woman who chucks it all in mid-life to enter an enclosed Benedictine women’s monastery.

“The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima”
👍 👍
This is an amazing movie!! It realy captures the faith of these children, and how courageously they spoke out, in spite of threats & persecutions.
The silent film on St Joan is called, I believe, The Passion of Saint Joan. (I actually own it in VHS, but I can’t lay hands on it to check…).

Check with your Parish…you might be surprised. Our Parish has a video library which was started and is maintained by parishoners. They currently have over 200 DVDs and even more video tapes…there is no charge and they have the latest and greatest as well as the oldies and the goodies. I would also suggest “The Catholic Mass…Revealed” which can be found at:

I recently saw a great film that I “accidentally” came across, called The Keys of the Kingdom. It’s one of Gregory Peck’s first films, in which he plays a Scottish priest who goes to China as a missionary. He has to deal with many difficulties, but overcomes them with his great faith, humility, love for others, and trust in God’s mercy. It’s a beautiful film, and truly inspired me to be more humble, trusting, and loving toward God and my fellow man.

One of my all-time favorite movies is Barabbas , starring Anthony Quinn. It’s the story of Barabbas after he is released as a prisoner. I guess it’s complete fiction, but good nonetheless. Anthony Quinn does a great job portraying a man who is wrestling with himself over why he was set free, and why did that other “man” die in his place. Barabbas is thrown into a bunch of different situations and you see his growth as a person. All I can say is I really like it. I watch it every Easter Sunday. (My mom and sister thought it was boring, so to each his own I guess!) I just checked on Ebay and there are a lot of copies of this DVD. One was only .99 so far. Wal-Mart use to carry it in its $5 dump-bin too. It’s not an expensive movie.
