Hello fellow Muslims,

I want to read the Quran. I’m doing so because I believe it’s intellectually beneficial to understand the faith of some 1.57 billion people across the world.

So, where do I begin? Preferably I would want to read the Quran in online than having it in physical format. I would also prefer the Quran to be in English rather than having to learn Arabic.

Thanks for all the help 🙂

Did you do a Google search for an online copy?

I’ve tried, but I can only get Arabic versions weirdly. Another issue I have is that I don’t know how to read the Quran. Do I read from back-to-front? Which chapter do I start with (the Quran isn’t in chronological order)? Is there are certain way of interpreting what I read?

Have you got a link?

I didn’t mean “begin” as in where do I begin to read, but rather, what do I have to keep in mind before reading the Quran. Besides, the Quran is not in chronological order like the Bible, if I’m not mistaken.

Thanks 👍.

About the website, do you think it’s important to hear the recitations, or can I just read it through my mind?
If you hear the recitations, they’ll be in Arabic which you don’t understand.

You said you wanted to read it in English. The site I sent you has the koran in many langues.

Did I mis-understand your OP inquiry…??

The koran is NOT in chronological order.

You’ll read it the way Uthman published it after Mohamads death.

You’ll readit it the way muslims read it.

You answered me perfectly.

I was just confused about the recitation function since I don’t understand Arabic but I’ve heard it mentioned that recitation is the “important” part of reading the Quran. If memory serves me correct, the very word Quran means “to recite”, hence why I asked.

But never mind. Thank you very much. I plan on reading it to expand my knowledge and also to respond to criticisms of Muslims of Christianity (can’t offer a counter-response if you’ve never read the Quran).

I agree with this. I actually got a free copy of the Quran.

You can order a free one from this website.

You can also Google “Free Quran” and find other sites offering this. This link I provided was the first one to come up and looks like the one I used (that was over 6 years ago so I can not be 100% positive).

I also believe that it is important to know the chronological order of the Surahs (books) as the Quran is not laid out in the chronological order that it was written in. Here is a link for that.

The only way to recite the koran is in Arabic - no other language.

The claim made by muslims is that in order for you to understand the koran, you must learn Arabic, read it in Arabic & recite it Arabic.

The problem with this claim in that most of the 1.4 billion muslims do not speak, read or understand Arabic.

Thanks a lot ByzCath :). I’m very glad you took some time to read a part of the Quran yourself. No wonder you’re so intelligent 😛

Al-Qur’an is “the recitation”, not “to recite” (there really isn’t an exact equivalent to English infinitive verbs in Arabic). When people say that recitation is important in the reading of the Qur’an, they mean that the Qur’an is meant to be recited (and the methods of reciting are important, I suppose). Sort of like how the Psalms are meant to be recited, rather than just read. It doesn’t mean that you can’t simply read them for comprehension (comprehension you won’t have if you just listen to Arabic recitations).

Since your “religion” status on your profile is empty… mind if I ask if you are a Catholic…?
Yes, I’m Catholic, and always will be. I was a bit angry at God a few days ago, so I removed it 😊. Things are better now.

You can listen to it in English online here:

theholyquran.org/?x=s_main&kid=15

You can click the “listen” icon and listen to all of their books 🙂 You will have to allow an add on windows media player. At least my computer asks me to allow it, not sure how your computer works.
You can also download their scriptures and read them.
