Any not-so-dedicated Catholics around?

Yup - this is in the Catholicity CD on the conversion of Scott Hahn. I just got the CD and I have listened to it 5 or 6 times in the past week.

It’s rather entertaining as well. On the third time I listened to it, I realized how wonderful his wife Kimberly is.

Same here. I will put in the CD player in the car and listen to it for about 2 weeks straight going to and fro work. Actually I do that with all my Apologetics CDs. Probably I will have each CD memorized in a few years!

I was not a member here at CA when this happened so I don’t know how it was reacted to.

IIRC, not a few similar sentiments were expressed here (though I do not recall anyone using the exact word “savior”). Particularly among the younger members, and if I may say – *ahem *-- more recent converts, there was surely expressed the crushing sense of loss for the only pope they had ever known.

And as a cradle Catholic who remembers 2 popes prior to John Paul II of blessed memory, I found their expressions embararassing and discomforting.

I know that there are alot of folks here who are really devout Catholics (and there’s nothing wrong with that, btw ) and I admire that.
Don’t know if this is the right place for this or not but I know the mods will move it if it isn’t.
Just didn’t know if there were other Catholics who are having issues with certain aspects of the CC, like maybe not believing completely in the Marian doctrines, or the teaching on contraception, etc. (just to name a few, I know there are others)?

Well, do you have a minute ?

On the one hand, I practice my faith: I keep the commandments (and I go to Confession when I don’t, or every 6 weeks or so). I pray (including, sometimes, the Rosary). I get to Mass (including daily Mass). I try to respond with love and compassion when others have doubts or questions about the faith. I try to treat Jesus as real: directly and in the neighbor. Etc.

On the other hand, I don’t believe everything that the Catholic Church teaches. On some issues, my beliefs are more like the teachings of the Orthodox Church than the Catholic Church.

For example:

I think divorce should be recognized, and I think divorced people should be able to receive the Eucharist after personal penance and sacramental confession.

I think artificial birth control (but not abortion) should be allowed if a couple decides it would genuinely help their marriage.

I think the Bishop of Rome is a first among equals and not the supreme authority just short of Christ. I find “papal infallibility” to be wrong and silly.

I think Mary, the Mother of God, is worthy of veneration and devotion and love; but I think she should only be shown in art as holding or presenting Jesus (not by herself).

I think the Mass (Divine Liturgy) should be in the vernacular; and I get annoyed with attempts to bring back Latin.

Etc.

As for cradle Catholics not taking their faith seriously: I’m a cradle Catholic, and my faith in Jesus Christ is the most serious, real part of my life.

And as for this website, I am coming here as part of my own discernment whether I should remain Catholic (despite my different opinions on certain issues) or if I should just join the Orthodox Church (which holds the same views on many things as I do).

In the meantime, I remain Catholic – and, in many ways, I remain happily Catholic. Catholic means “here comes everybody,” and the Eucharist is the sacrifice and the banquet where we all come to God, in Christ, through the Holy Spirit.
