Hi,
I am just wondering, as a father of 5 myself, I was happy when I heard from another father of 5 who posted on my thread!
So I guess I am wanting to know if there are more who have 5 or more? And what are there ups and downs with…
  1. Family Life
  2. Social Life
  3. Health and well being
  4. Stress levels and how to manage it
  5. Time out periods ( What do you do , do you go on holidays without the kids to wind down? etc…)
  6. What is your treasured moments
  7. Would you do it all again in another life!
Love to hear from you!
God Bless!:signofcross:

Raises hand

I have five children. (In fact, I’m married to that father of five in the other thread! 😛 )
  1. Family Life: Our family life is excellent. We spend a lot of time together as a family, but it is also nice that the children entertain one another. They have their fights, but they love playing together.
  2. Social Life: My husband goes out with his friends at least once a week, usually twice. We also have friends over to our house once a week. Once a week my husband I go for an outing with only the two youngest children while the big ones are at swimming. I love the time with my husband. But I admit I do not have much of a social life. 😦 It is one of the tougher parts for me. I homeschool the three big ones, so I really have no break. However, now that Baby #5 is reaching an age to eat something besides breast milk, I am hoping to resume going out with my husband on dates a couple of times a month. I love that. I get to have my husband to myself then! 😃
  3. Health and well being: We have no car, so we walk everywhere. That helps. I can’t work out too much right now because I am still nursing, but when I am neither nursing nor pregnant I have a couple of workouts I do at home when the children are busy or sleeping. My husband also exercises at home. It works for us. I’m wearing some of my jean-shorts from college as Baby #5 lolls on my lap, so it definitely works. 👍
  4. Stress levels and how to manage it: We pray the Rosary and the LotH. Seriously, without that, I think I would crack. Also, we take walks together. That is a lot of fun.
  5. Time out periods ( What do you do , do you go on holidays without the kids to wind down? etc…): Well, when the smallest one is able to eat food, we try to go out on a date together about twice a month. More would be nice, but the sitters get expensive. I don’t care where we go or what we do. I just like the time with my husband!
  6. What are your treasured moments: Nursing the babies. 😉 Also watching my husband play with our children.
  7. Would you do it all again in another life: Yes, I would.

  1. Family Life
Very very very busy. Fun, but busy.
  1. Social Life
What’s that? My wife moved to a new town a few years ago and it has been hard to find time to find friends. We have a lot of parent friends from school. Most of our social lives revolve around what the kids are doing.
  1. Health and well being
No complaints. Our last pregnancy was harder than the first four, so the recover took has taken a little longer.
  1. Stress levels and how to manage it
Prayer, fasting and play. I was work out in the evenings. My wife has her quiet time.
  1. Time out periods ( What do you do , do you go on holidays without the kids to wind down? etc…)
My wife has a once a year (at least) out of town trip with her childhood friends. I make an annual trip to a rib cook-off in Reno. We travel with the kids too, but that is to visit family ans such.
  1. What is your treasured moments
All of them. If I don’t treasure all of them, some of them could become a pain. Like getting up at six to help my seven year old with math.
  1. Would you do it all again in another life!
Most of the time, yes. Some days, well… 😉

Just thought I should say, GOD Bless you all!! 😃 How wonderful to have been blessed with so many children!

I don’t have 5 yet, but I found out during this last c-section that I might be able to! God bless you guys with big families! You are so lucky!

To the OP and others - So as a father of 4… (all boys - 6, 4, 2, and 4 months) I have a question. Is 5 really that much different that 4?

2 to 3 was the biggest change for us, so far add #4 hasn’t been that difficult except from a financial standpoint.

Our family life is great but hectic!

My husband and I have 9 children, and have had a difficult time with it. Our first two (twin boys) were born 11 weeks early, after I had spent 5 weeks on bedrest in the hospital. They spent 6 weeks in the hospital before coming home. They are now sixteen and have had relatively few problems. Next, we had three single children (boy, girl, boy), for a total of 5 children in 6 years. The youngest was born 4 weeks early (while visiting family out of town), and spent 21/2 weeks in the NICU, after being airlifted home. Three years later, we had another boy. I spent 5 weeks on bedrest, and although he was not born early, he spent 7 weeks in the NICU. Within the first week, he was diagnosed with Prader- Willi Syndrome. For the first couple of years, he had oxygen, monitors, and feeding tubes. He is now six, and receives special education and therapy services. The next child, another boy, was born just 15 months after the 6th. Again, I spent 6 weeks on bedrest, and he had only a short stay in the NICU. Three years later, we had a 7th boy. I was very sick throughout the pregnancy, but he did not arrive early. The last child, a 2nd girl, was born 10 weeks early (just 15 months after the 8th child), and spent 13 weeks in the NICU. She is 4 months old now, but continues to struggle. She has chronic lung disease, receives oxygen, and has an NG tube for feeding. In the next couple of weeks, she will have surgery to place a G-tube for feeding. Her long term health is unknown at this time. I had originally intended to homeschool all the children, but after the birth of a child with a disability, I found that I could not keep up with the responsibilities. It is a tremendous burden to have the children in public school, but I could not manage without it. This year, I homeschooled 2 of the children, but next year, I will only have 1 (the 1st girl) at home. My husband and I are very busy (might I say, overwhelmed) with the work at home, and have found little support from others. We are lonely, and are having difficulty finding our “place” in the Church. Because I love teaching, I “get away” by teaching Catechism classes at the parish when I can. What keeps me going is that I count myself among the saints. My favorite verses from Scripture are Hebrews 12:1-2:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perserverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” God Bless. 🙂

7 is not much different from 4 and actually…not much different financially…just FOOD! (why is it kids think they need to eat every day??) You have the same house, and hand me downs are a blessing!
Family life in a big family is great. I have 7 from 14-3 and If I didnt spend everyday laughing about it, I might cry! Most of it is all fun! I have days that wear me out, but I have great kids who love each other to the end of the earth! We have an unbreakable bond. They wont even tattle on each other at this point because it is no fun to have your best friend in trouble. They are an incredible source of help when we need it.
Jewish people would say that 5 kids is just half way to the quiverful. Every good soldier had ten arrows in his quiver at all times!

Yes, indeed.

I have six children. Four boys and two girls.

Yes family life is up and down.

Yes social life is up and down, depending on who has a game or practice.

I have to work hard to feed them, I am in great shape

I run, a lot, Ran a marathon last fall and am going to do it again.

Time outs- read books, play outside, etc.

Treasured moments: Birth-unbelievable, instant love.

Absolutely would do it all over again. maybe have more.

Lots of hard work, anguish, pain, stress, discomfort. But ALL worth it when your oldest (25) looks you in the eye and says “Thanks Dad”.

God Bless.

10 here - from 26 years to 18 months.

Yes, we have a TV, whoops, that’s just the answer I usually have to give when it comes to family size. I forgot, you post came from a different angle.

There are a thousand challenges to having any number of children. Each is an individual.

Financially, it does get a lot harder as they get older. The outside activities can get expensive; food - if you have teenage boys - gets outrageous. College has been a challenge. Three finished, two in the process right now.

Why do we have ten? Quite frankly, because God has given us ten. Eleven actually, if you could the baby who died in my arms at five months of age.

If He gives us more, we’ll gladly take them. Since the last three come via adoption, there is not actual limit to how many we might get. We’re not planning on growing any more, but who knows.

We have seven. We’ve had ups and downs–sometimes daily!! I think life with kids is a roller coaster. Put your seat belt on (prayer life) and hang on!!

I think life has become **a lot **easier since the older kids have reached their teens. They are so much more helpful. And, it’s great to be able to run errands or a short date without bringing in an adult babysitter.

Our social life is fun with other other hsing families and our community (see link). presentationministries.com/community/community.asp

I’ve found that I have to have several hour period by myself once a week to unwind to keep my happy demeanor. Since having our last baby (now almost 3 months), that’s limited to two hours between feedings.

I would do it all again but better!! I think it took four kids or so for me to settle into momhood. I was kind of restless at first.

I heard that one about having a tv, too! It got old.So did :“Have you figured out what causes that yet?”

Though I’m unmarried and childless… I had to peek at this thread. I’m smiling, ear to ear. 🙂 May God bless all of you. You are God’s most visible “witnesses” to the Gift of His Love… which is :heart:LIFE:heart:.

We have 4 girls & 2 boys, ages 7-19. I love it when people ask “Are they ALL yours?” 😃 But I feel like a rookie Mom amidst all of you who have 7+ children!

Check here…

I have 5 children. Oldest daughter will be 12 next month, only son is 6, another daughter that’s 5, my youngest daughter who is 2, and one in the oven who should be finished baking around All Saints Day. 😊

FYI, I am only 30 years old, and my wife is only 31. Technically, I didn’t father our 11 year old, but I have been the constant in her life for 10 years. She calls me daddy, and the loser who made her abandoned them and was banished years ago.

We recently started home-schooling, and it was the best thing we’ve done so far. Our two oldest are the only school-age kids, and they are both a year ahead in their studies. The kids are capable of keeping themselves busy and entertained. :slapfight:

Our children are still a bit young to enjoy active activities with them other than playing at the park, so I haven’t really been hit yet with different kids having different interests wanting different things.

I don’t get stressed. Neither does my wife. We’re both Army vets, and our house is a dictatorship. :nunchuk: Our kids don’t take long to learn a lesson. My son tests me sometimes, but the older they get, the easier it is to reason with them. :onpatrol:

We do everything together. My wife and I only get time to ourselves if Grandma says, “Bring me the kids”. Other than that, everything is a group activity. Sometimes our oldest goes out with the girls group from Church, and I expect more of that the older she gets. Outside of that, kite-flying is the one thing we all enjoy together, and it never gets old.

There’s so much to having a large family, I can’t cover it all here. I was ready for it, as I am the 3rd child of 7 from my parents. Obviously, my son wants a little brother, but we have another 3 weeks before we can find out. Please pray that we have another boy for him so he doesn’t jump off the roof!!! (He’s surrounded by girls :banghead:)
