Well when my knees aren’t all messed up I run cross country and long distance things like 5ks. I love it

They don’t have groups anymore. I was trying to find some sort of alternative.

I do! Well, I used to run a whole lot more than I do now, as in 4-ish days a week (I know that doesn’t sound like much to some people…), but I still consider myself a Runner…at least on race-days!

I run and bike on alternating days. Strength train too about three times a week. But running is my favorite activity.

I ran croos country, indoor and outdoor track in high school (the mile and two mile). I ran road races (5 & 10K) up until my late 20s when the knees couldn’t take it anymore. I loved it especially running the woods in cross country. Now I just walk the treadmill and work out the upper body.

Just wondering about this, but I’ve learned that it is no longer considered necessary or beneficial to stretch before running. So do any of the runners participating in this thread still stretch?

Not nearly as much as I used to do. More is done afterward.

I was never very good at stretching, so I should be glad at this development; nevertheless, it was a familiar ritual for many years.

I usually walk for about 5 minutes before and after running. (always run outside) After I run I do a yoga pose ‘legs up the wall’ if convenient, at the gym I mean, 10 mins - I love that. I do yoga or bike on non-run days. I don’t stretch before or after runs. Never had injuries. But I only do 3 mile runs and I go slow - to prevent injury. I am not super driven about it, never have been. To be honest my heart doesn’t even pound - except for uphill. I would be embarrassed to post my speed.

‘S’ okay. I’ve always felt it’s about competing against yourself, not others, and making gradual progress in getting fitter.

What is the difference between jogging and running? ; )

I am running long distance about 3 to 4 days per week. Hope to get in better shape! The alternating days I’m hoping to do more middle distance on the track and what not.

My knees start to hurt if I do distance every day, it seems. My goal is to get back to 8 minute miles for 5 miles or so. That would be an accomplishment for me.

Name this runner!

Could it be Katy Decker?

Well, you’ve got it half right m’boy! It’s little Mary!

She’s got arthritis to contend with these days so she can’t run much now but she’s got some other ways to work out, of course. There always are when one looks hard enough.

This was at the '84 Olympics in Los Angeles. The little barefoot rascal behind her inadvertently caused quite a fiasco in this race!

Yes, Mary of course. Once years ago I was in Eugene OR and a runner sped past me and my friend’s father nudged me and said ‘that was Mary (Decker) Slaney.’

I ‘run’ in my wheelchair. ♿ Have done a few 5K races since 2013 and have another one coming up next month.

@MrZoom, that’s great!
This is the second straight year I will be doing the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers / WPTLA 5K, to support my old basketball team. Last year was kind of messed up - the course was supposed to be along the Pittsburgh riverfront trail near the Steelers’ and Pirates’ stadiums, but we found out on the morning of the race that we had to take a detour - involving significant hills/ramps - due to closure of part of the trail. The result was my worst 5K time, over 49 minutes. This year they’ve moved to a new location in North Park, north of the city. Hoping for a better result this time.
