I ‘run’ in my wheelchair. ♿ Have done a few 5K races since 2013 and have another one coming up next month.
@MrZoom, that’s great!
This is the second straight year I will be doing the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers / WPTLA 5K, to support my old basketball team. Last year was kind of messed up - the course was supposed to be along the Pittsburgh riverfront trail near the Steelers’ and Pirates’ stadiums, but we found out on the morning of the race that we had to take a detour - involving significant hills/ramps - due to closure of part of the trail. The result was my worst 5K time, over 49 minutes. This year they’ve moved to a new location in North Park, north of the city. Hoping for a better result this time.
I hope you have a great race. I don’t have any races on the calendar at the moment (just trying - and failing - to lose weight; but I am getting into tip-top shape as a result of my efforts).

Try to make a small adjustment to your diet. That can help.

@Mrzoom

You’re an inspiration! Is it difficult to find good, safe places to train? I like to run a different route in town each day pretty much. That is one advantage of being bipedal.

@JamalChristophr

Fortunately, Morgantown has a system of “rail trails”, which have some fast, level straightaways. Good place to strap on the gloves and live up to my nickname. ♿

I’m constantly tinkering with my diet, but the interventions haven’t had any effect. I’ve tried at different times recently: avoiding carbs, avoiding red meat, avoiding sugar, eating larger breakfasts and lunches and smaller dinners, eating salad for dinner every night, eating soup for dinner every night. Haven’t found anything that makes a difference yet (but I have gotten to actually like and even crave salad). I need to lose 10 pounds.

I believe serious regular runners actually need reasonable amounts of sugars, whole grains, dairy products (low fat), healthy fats, proteins, vegetables, fruits, etc. Take care to always nourish bones and muscles. All ok: pasta, pizza, beer, wine, chips, ice cream, chocolate - Not All The Time, but as part of a healthy diet. (in reasonable quantities of course) I eat (white) pasta probably 3-4 times a week about half the time. What matters is what you eat it with - salad, beans, tomatoes, lemon, garlic, whatever. (all fresh) And keep it al dente. Avoid food fads.

I have a hard time running in the heat - starting around 80, 85 degrees. Ditto hiking in heat, exposed areas. Just knocks me out. I always think of the English (or Irish) national soccer side playing in heat - they all get SO red and sweaty, gasping on the sidelines with the water bottles. Some of us just can’t take the heat - I run much better and faster when it’s cold, raining, for obvious reasons.

Well, I’m going running right now. I have skipped two days in a row but the caffeine is still having effect so…

The old forum had the private groups. One was for runners. It never had much activity.

I am just curious how many people run for stress relief? I find it to be to best way to relieve stress.

It is weird that I can’t find a group of Catholic runners in my area. Ideally I would like to find someone guys who share the same faith and struggles. It also seems weird to me that since almost ever source out their will tell us that endurance exercise is so effective.

I TOTALLY agree running reduces stress, improves your mood. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I have found that running is THE best way to control moods, stress, anxiety. I am very close to calling it prayer, but hesitate to do that. There are some are very comfortable with it. I hesitate because it kind of sounds a little eastern religious-ish. I do many times pray while I run, but I am safety conscious. Traffic and area conditions dictate that.

On one hand I am surprised that I don’t find many more Catholics that use running as a prayer. The appearance of the new age stuff, on the other hand, explains to me why there aren’t more. Sort of like how many people freak out of yoga.

The last few months I have been cleaning up my diet and really using the near daily run for stress control. I am much happier, drink less, angry less, more patient. It is just disappointing to me that I can’t find others to share this with.

I am glad you started the thread. I have actually thought about it during my runs from time to time. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

And I say the Jesus Prayer or Hail Marys during running. I can’t do it without breaking concentration/thinking other things for more than a minute or two. I just pick up it again, drop it, pick it back up. I also pray (to Jesus) during my yoga - just to proactively calm any of those jitters out there…running does affect you a bit like meditative prayer.

Whenever I can I run in the woods or by the water where it can indeed almost be a sacred time. Years ago I read an article about nuns running - in habit in the photo which I found quite bizarre - one of them was quoted as saying ‘God runs with us.’ I bet he does.

Running is hard, miserable at times but one of the most rewarding (sometimes fun) things you can do. I agree on sticking with it - it is indispensable to me. Happy trails!

This all sounds familiar! When I pray I do lose my attention after a few minutes. I try to pray the Rosary, keeping track on my fingers. I mess up many time! But it is all ok.

I also try to run trails both for the beauty and the safety. I feel much safer praying on the trail. I don’t want to step into street by accident. More than that though. I like being in creation away from cars.

I’m running 4 times a week, about 30-40 minutes. It really relax me
