Just curious are any members of Catholic forums, singers or musicians (as career or hobby?)

What do you sing, and what instruments do you play?

Christian contemporary or rock etc…

I (mainly) play trumpet and piano. To be honest, I haven’t played much the past couple months as school has been crazy, but I love to play and will never stop! I also play flugelhorn, a slight bit of trombone, and a slight bit of french horn. I have always played jazz on the horns. On piano, I play religious/organ-like/classical/show tunes. Just talking about music makes me want to play! 😛

I play guitar, however I believe there is a better forum for this topic.

I am a chorister in a small men’s choir that specializes in Gregorian chant.

The tuba is my best instrument, but I also play trumpet and baritone. I used to play guitar (not very well, though), and I’m trying to learn how to play bass now.

Piano, some organ and vocalist. Before my health issues I cantored a local extraordinary form mass regularly. Also sang in the chorus with our symphony orchestra. Hoping to get back to it some day soon. I also have a rather large collection of 78 RPM records (mostly classical/opera, some jazz, dance music, etc.). Hence my username. I’ve always wanted a harpsichord. It’s on my bucket list 🙂

I can play several instruments badly and I can also sing badly but that didn’t stop me from doing it

I sing bass in my parish choir. I’m not a professional by any means, but I can carry a tune pretty well. I play the bodhran drum with a little skill, but not enough for a Celtic band or anything like that. I also play the tambourine, and have played it since I was a child (my family are Ludad/Gypsy and very musical.) I’ve tried to learn the guitar like my father and grandfather, but I can’t make my fingers do the chords and my fingers are fat and keep hitting other strings I’m not trying to press. I do alright with a Native American (pentatonic) flute as well. I’d love to learn the cimbalom (hammer dulcimer) if I could afford one.

I play guitar & sing in our Charismatic Prayer group.

I also play midi guitar & sing with my own prerecorded band backgrounds at restaurants & Assisted Living Facilities on a regular basis.

Hi Mary,

I was a volunteer parish musician for many years at two different parishes.

I was an adult choir member at both parishes, and then at one parish specifically, I was a Cantor and Psalmist and I also assisted with the Youth choir as well.

I play the piano and I have a digital piano with a full-sized keyboard that is fun to play. I like to put it on the pipe organ setting and then play hymns on it. 🙂

I play for fun now but I did play the piano in church for a period of time on a weekly basis before our weekly devotions. I would play hymns.

I’m a classically trained vocalist, an NPM Cantor Colleague, amateur (and sometimes-) lever harper, and I play just enough piano to lead vocal exercises when I teach.

I sing and play trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn. I’m a firm subscriber to the notion that if God gave you wonderful musical talent it should be shared with the world, and if given poor musical talent, He should be plagued with it.

Note: This was from a parish priest who wanted to encourage people to sing more at mass (whether they were good or terrible).

I have been in my parish’s choir since 1998. I sing bass.

In 2000, we did a performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah, which was well received.

Not a singer. I’m not sure if I’d qualify as a musician; I don’t have the talent to turn professional.

Regardless I do play (or attempt to play) several instruments.
  1. bass clarinet
  2. piano
  3. tuba
  4. hand bells
  5. ukulele
My brother does have a tenor sax in his closet but I don’t have much interest in it, yet. I do want to learn how to play the viola one day (violin is too common for me) and the slide guitar.

The tuba is my best instrument, but I also play trumpet and baritone. I used to play guitar (not very well, though), and I’m trying to learn how to play bass now.
It’s probably me, but every time I attempt to play the trumpet, just trying to get some notes out, I feel like I’m going to swallow the mouthpiece since I’m so use to the largeness of the tuba mouthpiece.

I was a 22+ yr. rock drummer (classic, modern & alternative rock, & glam metal) strictly on weekends playing nightclubs, outdoor parties/events, or just endless band practice. Also did studio recording with original music.

I have been playing classical guitar for over 40 years but I am only proficient in easy to medium pieces even now. About ten years ago I took up the shakuhachi and love it so much. That lead to traditional flute where I am a beginner. I am also a beginner on bongo drums (at 62).

I have to say though what a blessing classical guitar has been. Even though I am not that great it introduced me to the world of music and composers. Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Gaspar Sans, John Dowland, so many periods of music history, so many moods. And I love it that there are standard pieces that students learn through. And it is like the music takes us into the mind of the composer. And even though I am still not THAT good and never will be, there are many easy pieces that are beautiful. And there are difficult pieces I know I will never play well.

guitar & bass. I played bass in hard rock bands in high school & punk bands while I was in college. Right now I play acoustic guitar at mass with our “contemporary” music ministry.

Loooool, this forum has a disproportionate number of tuba players! 😃 I am ALSO currently learning how to play the tuba (~1 year), but I’m much better at singing (Tenor) and piano.

As for what I’m doing with my musical talents… I used to sing in the glee club at my undergrad university, but now that I’m in grad school, i’m not sure I have time for a standing commitment like that. I sing for my current university’s Masses on occasion (less so recently, unfortunately), and play tuba with the university’s one-hour-a-week “marching” band. I also compose some video game-style music in MuseScore in my spare time.

(PM me if you’re near the Boston area, by the way! It would be nice to meet musicians who share my faith values.)
