I’m more of a hobbyist.
I’ve been playing flute for a little over 20 years. I was one of the best in my high school but never really went to the next level. My college had no real music program to participate in.
I also enjoy singing and I can hold my own in ensembles. I’m a solid contralto and could have qualified for Tenor I in region/all state choir if I felt like being a nuisance and making some waves. The fact that I never auditioned at all is one of my biggest musical regrets. At the time I was severely intimidated by the audition process, but in hindsight, after seeing my sisters and brother put successfully themselves out there, I think I would have done really well if I only had the guts to try.
I can play a number of folk flutes and the ocarina pretty well.
I dabbled with the trombone in high school. I own a trombone but the slide is something I still haven’t gotten the hang of (I can just barely reach 6th position). I WILL learn it some day. I’ve always wanted to play since I was a kid.
I’ve also messed with guitar, electric bass and ukelele.
My husband owns a tenor sax and I am alllllmost to the point where I can say “I can play the tenor sax” with a straight face. I could play it reasonably well if I applied myself more. But I have a new toy to play with…
My goal is to get competent enough to show up at the local Tubachristmas (or even the NYC one) in 6 months and not feel like a weak link.

Uhhhh…I haven’t quite made that far of a leap to the dark side yet but I landed pretty close. I started renting an euphonium just this week and I have been playing the snot out that thing ever since it came into the house. It’s absolutely surreal how fast it’s coming to me. I was writing in slide positions above every note to the bitter end in high school and now I’m sight reading whatever tunes I can find that is middle school friendly (in bass clef too!) off the top of my head. Such a departure from flute and I am loooooving it.Loooool, this forum has a disproportionate number of tuba players!![]()
