It seems like almost everything in the Social Justice section is about homosexuality or gay “marriage”, at least recently. It’s kinda bothering me.

So the purpose of this thread is to discuss any social justice issue not involving that kind of stuff.

What do you think about the idea of government-sponsored healthcare? (I’m not talking Obamacare; I’m talking about the kind of system I work in, where free care for the poorest sections of society is provided by government-run hospitals and clinics, using taxpayer money.) My own take is that it’s flawed, but that it’s often the “least worst option” in countries like ours. From a Catholic POV, it could be viewed critically as a form of socialism, but it’s a little more complicated than that. Views?

In the USA the Constitution clearly stipulates for the states to decide on health care. Minnesota has a state program called “MinnesotaCare” that is only for poor people and refugees, and you have to prove you don’t have valuable assets, lots of money in the bank or stocks, show that your employer doesn’t offer insurance and meet certain income requirements.

There’s little chance this would work in a lot of places in the West today because special interests and idealists who want to cram their ideology on everyone would screw it up royally.

Minnesota has a state program called “MinnesotaCare” that is only for poor people and refugees, and you have to prove you don’t have valuable assets, lots of money in the bank or stocks, show that your employer doesn’t offer insurance and meet certain income requirements.

That sounds promising. Actually I like the “decentralized” idea because “centralization” often ends up screwing some states: for a simple example, those states that are far from the capital (or that aren’t ruled by allies of the ruling party) often get a raw deal when it comes to funding. As someone who’s worked in “Central Government” (=federal) hospitals for the past 10 years, I’ve seen the problems that can arise. State-run hospitals do a bit better that way, but they suffer from issues of nepotism and corruption when it comes to staff appointments - the best way to get a “city” posting or a good post is to have an MP in one’s pocket.

There’s little chance this would work in a lot of places in the West today because special interests and idealists who want to cram their ideology on everyone would screw it up royally.

Fortunately that isn’t a problem here. Though official government policy is very liberal (pro-choice, pro-contraception) it’s not obnoxiously so, and those who disagree aren’t significantly harassed or made to feel out of place.
