Any SSPX "converts" to Rome out there?

The SSPX is very tempting to me, I attended their Mass a couple of times (which were great) but I haven’t been back since because my parish priest told me that I could not attend Mass at their chapels. The thing is this, I understand where the SSPX is coming from, I even agree with a lot of what they say, but their Masses ARE illicit. The question with the SSPX is not validity, their Masses are certainly valid, the question is licitness. Since the SSPX has no canonical status, they have no local bishop, and no jurisdiction. Therefore, (since jurisdiction is required for the sacrament of confession) all of their confessions are invalid, and all of their Masses are illicit. Remember if a priest celebrates a black mass it is valid, but it is not licit.

To go against the Pope and to go with the SSPX is like saying Jesus is wrong, when he said that the gates of hell would not prevail against his Church, because why else would someone leave it. Remember that we are called to be obedient, obedience is key throughout the Catholic faith, MANY of the saints preached about obedience (St. Padre Pio, St. Josemaria Escriva, St. Alphonsus Ligouri, St. Francis de Sales…the list goes on) and they were following the example of obedience the was set by Christ himself when He was obedient unto death, death on a cross. After the second Vatican Council (which didn’t call for MANY of the changes we see in some of the Masses today) the Pope said “Roma Locuta Est, Causa Finita Est” which is Latin for “Rome has spoken, the matter is closed,” once the Pope pronounced this we as loyal subjects of Christ are required to obey the successor of Peter (who Jesus made head of the Church). I assure you that we have not acquired some great knowledge in our life that makes us so smart that we know better what to do than the Pope does.

Also St. Alphonsus Ligouri said that we must always be obedient to the Pope, if the Pope told him to get into a row boat and to row across the ocean in the midst of a great storm St. Alphonsus said he would do it, and that if he died then it would be the Pope’s fault for telling St. Alphonsus to do it, but that it is not his place to question the Pope. My point is that we are called to be obedient to the Pope, and always do what he says even if it seems to be wrong to us, and if we are doing what is wrong because of the Pope, then that is something the Pope has to answer for, not us. However, when we go on our own and join an illicit society that is NOT in communion with Rome, then we are disobedient to the Pope, and if Archbishop Lefebvre leads us down the wrong path, he is NOT accorded the same status of the Pope. If we do something that is wrong because Archbishop Lefebvre told us to then that is on us, because Archbishop Lefebvre is not the Pope, Jesus did not build the Church on the Rock of Archbishop Lefebvre, therefore we CANNOT follow the SSPX without risking our souls.

I agree that there have been abuses in the Novus Ordo, but there are GOOD Novus Ordo Masses too, if you go to a Novus Ordo and the are using Gregorian Chant, an Organ, and generally being Catholic then YOU HAVE TO GO TO THAT MASS IF THERE IS NO LATIN MASS AROUND YOU. If the Novus Ordo has dancing girls, they are blessing you with a supersoaker, and the priest is beat-boxing the consecration, then I would avoid that Mass. If there is a good Novus Ordo around you and there is an SSPX Latin Mass around you, YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE NOVUS ORDO, THE SSPX DOES NOT FULFILL YOU OBLIGATION AS A CATHOLIC BECAUSE IT IS ILLICIT.

Remember there were abuses in the liturgy before Vatican II as well, in Malachi Martin’s book Hostage to the Devil a possesed priest would change the words because he was speaking Latin and no one knew the difference, he would also baptize in the name of the earth, the wind, and fire. Liturgical abuse is not something new. We as Catholics that do understand and know are faith should try to change our parishes from within, we cannot abandon our Church, if we see something wrong, we should speak up, but we cannot go outside of the Church and expect to still be a part of the Church.
Just to point out that someone would have noticed, contrary to popular belief most people understood at least the basics of latin and everyone knew ‘in nomine patri et fili et spiritus sancti’ so how a priest would get away with baptising in the name of the earth etc… I don’t know 🤷

As for the rest I won’t bother addressing it, these SSPX threads are tiresome and pointless.

Well it is in the book, and the book is a true story so read the book and then provide your feedback:thumbsup:

I attended an SSPX chapel for 6 months. I asked if I could pray the liturgy of the hours, they said I shouldn’t because it’s protestant. They said the same thing about the ordinary form of the Mass, but I knew that wasn’t true because I had went to a wonderful NO church in the past (I have returned there). What changed it for me was reading the Missal during Mass, I realized the Novus Ordo was actually very close to the Latin Mass, esp with the new changes that had been announced.

I am very glad I came back.

🙂

By the way they had a young priest there that that I really liked.

I’d love to hear more if you don’t mind. What caused you to make that decision to leave the society? What were the consequences? What do you think about the SSPX from your current position?
Thank you.
Sure…I can tell you more when I have more time, but in a nutshell…I was never quite sure of their position. Now, I believe that their position is the least desirable and the most illogical. They sit on the fence while talking out of both sides of their mouths, they claim to recognize the pope as the pope but they disobey.

They absolutely tell the faithful that they should NOT go to the Novus Ordo, that it is a bad mass…and this even after Summorum Pontificum.

I am also convinced that they are a cult and that many there, have a cult mentality…I have the family members to prove it.

I’d be happy to elaborate on my experiences if anyone is interested…

One can deceive in any language. Why pick on Latin to try to show abuses before Vatican II? One could baptize in any vernacular for as long as I remember.

I have no intention of reading a book about exorcism and possession, perhaps when or if I am a priest but until then I shall leave such things to the more spiritually mature.

I can’t come up with a good wisecrack about Malachi Martin’s books being for the more spiritually mature…

I think Gabriel Amorth’s books would be a little more realistic about exorcisms, and filled with fewer conspiracy theories than Martin’s.

I’m kind of worn out by SSPX discussions, to be honest.
That makes two of us 🙂

I’m going to say a prayer for all of us and perhaps in their mercy some people will say a prayer for me 🙂

'*To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity wherewith thou wert united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength.
Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen off-spring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness. And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so now defend God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.*'

I must confess I haven’t read any 😊

But as I said its a subject area I believe it would be imprudent to investigate.

:rotfl:

Stop it! You have me laughing so hard, my kids are wondering what’s wrong with me.

Gotcha … I was just having a little fun.
I didn’t mean to go off topic. I’m sure there are other threads that discuss Martin’s writings.

Perhaps they are to you 🤷 Why waste your time on them?

I find them very interesting and informative.

Wow - the LOTH have been prayed for over a 1000 years - well before the Protestants.

Might be because LOTH has had a few changes over the years, so they might think that it changed due to “Protestant influences”. Or something…?

Shocking - what next would they like to unrecognize some Saints :eek:

There are a few people who don’t recognize Divine Mercy Sunday, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, or St. Faustina. They also question the beautification of Blessed John Paul II. And there’s also a few people who simply don’t recognize canonizations after a certain year.

Yes, I know known of them above makes sense.

At the end of the day, this will be done on God’s time, not ours.

They’re referring to the Traditional Divine Office versus the Liturgy of the Hours.
Thanks, I thought it was something like this. I still don’t understand the methodology behind the thought process that people have when they think this though.

There are some things the SSPX believes that I agree with. I won’t go into them on this forum, so as not to break any rules.

The things I don’t agree with include:

The Divine Office. I think both the Traditional Divine Office and the Liturgy of the Hours are quote beautiful.

The fact that some recommend that rather than go to a non-SSPX, EF mass, one should stay home and say the Rosary. That can’t be right.

Having said that, I pray for reconciliation because they have amazing priests with a lot to offer the Church.
