Any suggestion on various movies for a youth group

Hello everyone. Don’t know if this topic is in the right place but the moderators can maybe put it in the right place. :confused:

I’m part of a group of youth in a parish that see each other once a week to discuss various topics regarding faith. Sometimes we watch movies and series. But we need help with proposals on movies or movie-series to watch that’s good. Any suggestions?

Probably not what you’re asking for but the new Battlestar Galactica deals heavily with the issue of faith. It’s not Christian faith, but it discusses faith in general. The idea of faith, IMO, is often over looked in todays religious discussions. Obviously things like abortion, and marriage, and family, and social justice are highly important…but without faith none of those things matter.
 
For a serious movie with Catholic themes,

“The Way” with Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen. A son dies on a hiking trip and his father carries out the journey on his behalf, meeting several other pilgrims and going through a sort of “Wizard of Oz” growth experience.

Now, just for fun and laughs?

“Adventure Time with Finn and Jake.” Shown on the cartoon channel, new season starting on 1/9/2012). Best cartoon series in recent history. Just an absolutely crazy and silly show. Teens love it (some of their moms do too!).

Well, thanks for the response. We’re only interested in movies with catholic themes. We have so far watched the whole Catholicism-series with Fr. Barron and one or two lectures with Tim Staple with great response. Now we need something more.

So keep the tips coming.

What is the age of the Youth members? If they are young adults (18-25), they will probably enjoy Matthew Kelly’s video series Passion and Purpose. It’s all about living out your Catholic faith in the working world and in marriage and family life. I had a good response with young people who had done at least some part-time work and were dating. (Those not yet dating and not yet working didn’t get much out of it; they couldn’t really relate to it.)

I assume you probably already watch Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ during Lent.
 
There is, of course, the Passion of Christ. But I’ve never seen it, so technically I probably shouldn’t even recommend it, even though I’ve heard it’s really good. But the Blindside has its Christian moments. Plus it’s a good movie. So I recommend it.

Going to guess you are not in the US (with such a mix of teens and adults in one group), so, I am not sure what would be available.

Steve Ray’s “Footprints Of God” series is very good.

All of the “Great Adventure” Bible studies are available in video format.

“St. Giuseppe Moscati” - It does have English subtitles since the movie is in Italian, but it is a
beautiful movie. Found out after seeing it that he was the doctor who discovered insulin. His
mother died of diabetes.
One of the things I would do if I had the money, is have a library of most of the recent films made
by the director of the above movie. He has a movie “St Philip Neri” that I am anxious to see,
as well as " Bakhita:From Slave to Saint". I haven’t seen these two yet, but they seem to be
as compelling as “St. Giuseppe Moscati”.

Yes, you guessing right. We’re in Sweden. We started just as a group of youth that wanted to see the Catholicism-series together where we invited everyone under 25 that was interested. Since there ain’t so many catholics in Sweden maybe explains the mix of ages.

Since we see how people growing in faith we just can’t see this die out so I’m interested in any suggestions of movies or series to watch.

Of course people can suggest anything more than just movies. But that’s off topic so people are welcome to post me a message 😊
 
The Mission" is a great movie. It stars Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons.

While “The Mission” is a good film, it is very questionable in it’s content. We would not want to glorify liberation theology.

Same for “Shoes of the Fisherman” - if one could show it and then NOT show the end of the film it would be a great movie. It gives in to the Judas crowd at the end.
 
As long as the film is not objectionable in language, content, etc., then it could be shown and then scenes discussed in reference to faith and morals. This brings out a lot of hidden misconceptions about our faith that might be corrected and explained.

Just a thought.

mostly are lives of saints and are inspiring
