Hello,
This is my first time posting in 3-4 months.

Can Sunday Mass ever be as short as a weekday Mass? Anyone ever been to a Sunday Mass with no music and either no or a really short homily (3-5 minutes tops)? I prefer not to be in church too long

I attend a university in city center Philadelphia and haven’t found a church nearby that has this. There is a Latin Mass about a 10 minute WALK from me every Sunday but it is a high Mass. Too long. If it was a low Mass I would definately go.
Yes, I am really Catholic:

What’s the holdup in being in church too long? A normal weekend Mass is usually an hour or, at max, and hour and a half. Is that too much to ask?

Sorry, you’re not going to find what you’re looking for. There is no “express line” when it comes to the Sunday mass.

Well, in hopes that you will come to love the Mass if you are not too annoyed by staying too long, I’ll tell you that the earliest Mass on Sunday morning (around 7:00 am) is usually quiet and short.

Why even go if all you want to do is punch your mass card and leave?

Jesus, our Lords peace be whit You.
Yes,why go at all if You don’t want to stay for as long as it takes? Attending mass is a very importen thing cause thru mass, communion and the prayers,we are closer to God then we can be in any other places but heaven.
I can’t attend mass. I suffer from depression,panic-attacks and can’t leave my dog because one person, sorry, sick person who thinks she can get me if I don’t have a dog,she tryed to poison the dog before this one,and she can toss pills and so on thru the mail-box,so I am forced to stay home. And I miss mass, every sunday, every week-day,but can’t go. Be happy You can,and go!

I prefer to get up early and be done with my Sabbath obligation ASAP. Then, I can work out and pray 5-10 decades of the rosary (without beads) and study from aprox 11AM-past midnight with a few breaks. I don’t like to pray the rosary exclusively (doing nothing else) because it just takes up more time. I’m a medical student trying to obtain super board scores and grades to match into a competitive and super duper high paying (~400K++/yr) surgical or radiological speciality. Time is limited.

I prefer to study that much on Sundays because then it gives me off time during the week to review and be better prepared for clinic sessions/simulation labs, etc.

I have Fridays and Saturdays off and typically prefer to relax/party on Fridays. If it’s the first Friday I observe the Sacred Heart devotion so that is only once a month…not that much time.

I don’t like being in church long. I just don’t enjoy it. I found a Mass at 8:30 am and it’s just under one hour. I walk in immediately as Mass starts and walk out immediately after the blessing.

the shortest weekend masses I know of are around 45 minutes. As BaltoBetsy said they are usually the first mass of the day. One parish near me has a 7am mass and one about fifteen minutes away has a 7:30 am mass. Those are too early for me on a Sunday even though a quiet mass is different that one with music.

Why don’t you take SUNDAY off instead of Friday? All the rosaries and devotions in the world will not make up for one Mass. When you are a doctor, will you have time only for the patients with short illness?

I just discovered a church two blocks from me that has Mass with no music at 7:30 am! With no music and less people it should be 45 minutes tops.

I prefer not to take Sunday completely off. It is typically a study day in medical school. Friday and Saturdays are generally social days with minor studying at my medical school and it is important to my social life (important to everyone) that I minimize studying on those days and go out drinking (in “moderation”) clubbing partying etc.

So, on Sundays, I can get my obligation done in just ~45 minutes and move with the day (work out, study in the library, etc).

I offer up all my hard work to God.

So wait. You rather go to a short Mass so you can go party for the maximum amount of time while still cramming in your Sunday obligation? It should be the other way around, to be honest.

Early Sunday morning Masses are often quite short, with little or no music. The earlier, the shorter, in my experience.

It works for me in my own situation. I would rather wake up early on Sunday, walk two blocks to the earliest and shortest Mass and leave immediately. I honor God outside of church by “offering” up my efforts in studying very hard. I usually pray a decade of the Rosary after 2-3 hours of studying, etc.

I would totally attend a Tridentine low Mass if it was available.

My Church’s mass is usually 45 minutes on Sunday and 30 minutes on weekdays.

Family Masses are longer though, because the homily is designed especially for the children.

I find it very sad–you would shortchange the Lord for a “super duper high paying (~400K++/yr)” job. I find it even sadder, it doesn’t seem to pang your conscience. 😦

Your posts on this thread are focused on what you want out of your weekends, rather than what God wants.

Honestly, it doesn’t sound like all of that studying is much of a sacrifice to “offer up,” anyway–you said yourself that you’re doing it for that $400K++ salary you plan to get out of the deal.

You’re in my prayers.

Hey, folks, give the guy a break. Medical school is a pressure cooker, and in spite of that, he’s still going to Mass and praying and offering his work for the glory of God. How many medical students do that? I’d be willing to say many more lose their faith altogether.

Before you consider my studying to not be an “offer” try the following:

*Be an undergraduate student (in the US system) and take an intense pre-medicine load. Also, be literally in the top five percent of your entire school to barely have chance at being allowed to apply for admission in US MD programs. In 2010 there were ~16,000 MD seats and over 110K+ applications. My entire undergraduate studies consisted of 1-2 nights of sleep deprivation every week in order to make sure the lowest grade I ever got was a B+. Sadly, it was also alot of competition with other students. I’ll admit I am not the only one that did not help other students in order to ensure that got C’s etc.

Going to Mass early on Sundays works for me. Going to family Masses that last 1.5 hours doesn’t work for me. Additionally, everyone knows those lite unorthodox liberal Catholics that think birth control is okay or Purgatory doesn’t exsist tend to flock the later and longer Masses.

I just wanted to know of other people’s experience with early and short Masses.

Doing it for the money? Of course I am. That’s not all though. Maybe I want to achieve something great? Maybe I enjoy the thrill and rush of doing something extremely exclusive (neurosurgery, et)??

Money is an issue. 4 years undergrad 4-5 years +MD schools+ specialty residency ~4-5 yrs) of course I expect a high salary. Oh yeah, I’m going to be in debt about 250K also.

No, I’m not doing it just for just the money. I’m not afraid to admit I’m also doing it partially for the money. It’s also for God’s glory.

I don’t see what is wrong with not wanting to be in church too long? It’s not my thing. I’m very objective when it comes to religion. I have no warm fuzzy feelings. I have no enjoyment in reading scripture but rather I read it when necessary to clarify doctrine.

I bring God into my life other ways besides being inside a church. My most prayerful times are while working out in the gym and study breaks looking out a window in the library. All this saves time also. Time for me to study, relax, spend time with my girlfriend, maintain a balanced social life, etc.

The way I decided to arrange my weekends is best for my academic, physical, social, and spirtual health. Wouldn’t God want that?

Yes, I consider myself quite Catholic. In fact, I am an ex-Protestant.

Mass is offered 7:30am. Some people have to go.
