I feel called to join you, but I am having trouble finding a community. I live near Dubuque, IA. Can anyone help me or direct me to someone who can?

Thanks JimR! I hope that I can find a community closer… otherwise the distance could prove to be quite a problem. Do you know of any in the Dubuque Iowa area?

Let me know if you find some in Iowa- I live on the other side of the state from you, and I’ve been looking a bit, too.

I can’t imagine that you are bound to a community in your province… but I may be wrong.

One certainly may join a Community outside of the specific Province of the Order in which one lives (e.g., if one lives on the border of South Carolina and Georgia, each being in different Provinces of the Discalced Carmelite Friars); one may even join a Community at a further distance than a more local one. It is easier, of course, to live in close proximity to one’s Community.

The problem will be formation. It takes about 5 - 6 years, to make your definitive promises and generally, you are under the guidance of a formation director and spiritual assistant. If you have to leave one province and join a group in another province, it could be difficult.

Also, beware, not all OCDS group function as they should. Some are more like a prayer and social group, and don’t following the Constitution(formerly called the Rule), as they should.
Their organizational skills are in some cases, non-existent. Also, like everywhere elses, the Discalced Carmelites, have a shortage of priest, and the one that is assigned as your spiritual assistant, will be stretched thin.

Either way, its in God’s hands. Pray to Our Lady of Mt Carmel, for you to find the right path.

Jim

He is an informative website about our third order (O.Carm.)

carmelnet.org/toc/toc.htm

It is for the Chicago province, so you could get in touch with them, and they will let you know about any communities of lay carmelites in IA.

I hope this helps.

In Carmel,

Br. Allen
