Any thoughts on Oscars 2016?

I watched the Oscars tonight. I actually had seen 4 or 5 movies that were nominated.
I was surprised Spotlight got Best Picture. It was good, but had only won one other award.
I was glad to see Mark Rylance win for Bridge of Spies.

Anyone else want to share their thoughts?

This was one of the few times in Oscar history when a film won for best picture but NOT its director. The director of the film Revenant won the award. You are much better informed than I am; I saw NONE of the current movies so I have no comment on the performances of the actors and actresses, only some whose work I am familiar with. However, the awards ceremony itself was, as usual, long and tedious, and the host, comedian Chris Rock, was fairly good but not as great as some past hosts such as Billy Crystal. The songs were awful IMO. All in all, an enjoyable evening LOL.
 
I watched it. I admit I haven’t seen any of the films though I do what to see Bridge of Spies, and now Spotlight.

AFA the Oscars itself, well, I’ve come to see the Oscars as just being what it is, the Oscars. The film industry recognizing the work done within it. Im glad that Chris Rock wasnt anything like NPH from last year.

It had it’s moment of politics, but then Hollywood is often political, so nothing new there, and nothing wrong with that either.

I did get tired of the comments about how no black nominees over and over and over again. Hey, I get that they want to get their point across to the Academy, but the Academy isn’t US, the over-all viewing public. It’s the people who were sitting in those seats tonight, not us in our living rooms. And I appreciate Chris Rock’s opening comments about hey, it’s not like this is the 60’s when there was much more serious reasons to protest. I appreciate he giving the controversy some balance in that.

I’m not sure about that; I’d have to check. I believe there were only about three such cases in the history of the Oscars, one film directed perhaps by Steven Spielberg or Woody Allen.

I was expecting The Revenant to get Best Picture since it got Best Director and Best Actor. I haven’t seen it, but a lot of people were saying they thought it was his year.
I wasn’t impressed with any of the songs either.
We employ a lot of British and Australian actors I notice.
Hollywood is a strange and powerful place.
 
Star Wars: The Force Awakens didn’t win any awards it was nominated for. Thanks be to God! :signofcross:

I found it very disappointing, and it’s probably uncharitable but I confess that it dismays me that most people like it.

A few of Chris Rock’s remarks were crude. He is a father of two girls! Inappropriate.

It is interesting that the problems in regards to lack of opportunity given to Black actors etc. is happening in Hollywood, a place which is claimed to be so liberal.

I only saw *Bridge of Spies *and The Martian, and would like to have seen a couple of others (including and still: Spotlight).

YES! Every time this sort of thing comes up (eg last year’s Emmys which recognized the lead actress from How to Get Away With Murder) I say this. The acadamy(s) doesn’t ask for my nominations nor my vote* let alone do I get to make casting decisions! Sheesh!

Also, picked my jaw up off the floor: Sam Smith is the *“first openly gay man” *to be awarded an Oscar!? Really!? Really!?!? :rolleyes:

(* Which is probably a good idea, or else *The Martian *and *Ant-Man *would have swept everything 😛 )

I was surprised that Mad Max won so many awards.

Leonardo’s speech on climate change was long. and I could have done without Sam Smith’s announcement too.

These people think way too much of themselves.

It is good to see Australians give room for some of the American actors as in The Revenant with that bloke who rarely wins anything. About time too. I always thought some of the very best American actors were black, negroes, or coloured or whatever the PC word is over there . Who can forget Al Jolson and the other greats.
It seems to me that the egos and politics take over the fun. Modern films lack the nuance and comedic mix with serious themes of some of the classics I remember with Spencer Tracey and Hepburn, Sidney Portier and Morgan Freeman.
However, I am always amused at the supposed glamour of the female stars. Some of the sad waifs need a hot meal and appear too poor to purchase appropriate underwear. There ought to be a St. Vincent de Paul van strategically positioned near the red carpet.

At least it was not as long as a few years ago.

You know, one day I am actually going to watch it.

I love star wars. I wish it had won for best score or sound mixing.

The academy awards has become too raunchy .

That Mark Rylance win will certainly go down in history as one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history. Sylvester Stallone was expected to win for “Creed” – and if he hadn’t blown it by completely ignoring his director and co-star (both black) at his Golden Globes acceptance speech – the Supporting Actor win would have been his.

I really liked Chris Rock’s opening comments about black actors not being offered the same opportunities – Stallone’s awkward Golden Globes speech is evidence of that – though I don’t think Stacy Dash (from “Clueless” and Fox News) did herself any favors with that Black History Month would-be joke.

Very glad to see Amy Winehouse “Amy” got the Best Documentary.

Very glad to see the legendary Ennio Morricone FINALLY win an Oscar. 👍

In Hollywood, as in so many other settings, the working definition of “liberal” is “Do what I say, not what I do.” Thus the many incidents of “speech police” on “liberal” college campuses.

And why wouldn’t you?
We the British, gave Leonardo DiCaprio a BAFTA award for best actor and The Revenant for best film.

Also we awarded the honour of knighthood to one of your greatest actors-Sir Sidney Poitier.👍
